Maximizing Skill & Feat Effectiveness
In Knights of the Old Republic, your character's effectiveness in and out of combat is heavily influenced by the skills and feats you choose. Strategic selection and application of these abilities can sificantly enhance your character's capabilities, allowing for smoother gameplay and access to more options.
The game's skill system is based on the d20 system, similar to Dungeons & Dragons. Key skills include Computer Use, Demolitions, Stealth, Awareness, Persuade, Repair, and Treat Injury. Each skill has a specific utility. For example, Computer Use allows you to hack terminals, disable security systems, and gain valuable information. Persuade is crucial for non-violent resolutions and gaining Light Side points, while Stealth can help you avoid combat or gain an advantage.
Intelligence is the primary attribute that governs the number of skill points you receive when leveling up. Therefore, characters with higher Intelligence will have more flexibility in developing a wide range of skills. However, it's important to focus on skills that al with your character's class and playstyle. A Soldier might prioritize Treat Injury and Awareness, while a Scoundrel would benefit greatly from Stealth, Demolitions, and Computer Use.
Feats are special abilities that provide passive bonuses or active combat maneuvers. They are gained every few levels and are crucial for specializing your character. Some feats enhance combat prowess, such as Two-Weapon Fighting or Critical Strike, while others improve utility, like Skill Focus or Toughness.
When building your character, consider the synergy between attributes, skills, and feats. For instance, a character with high Dexterity will benefit from feats that improve ranged combat accuracy and critical hit chances. A Force-sensitive character will want feats that enhance their Force powers, such as Force Focus or Force Sensitivity.
Here's a breakdown of effective skill and feat strategies:
- Prioritize Key Skills: Focus on 2-3 core skills that complement your class. For most characters, Treat Injury and Awareness are universally useful.
- Attribute Synergy: Ensure your attribute scores support your chosen skills and feats. High Intelligence for skills, Dexterity for ranged/defense, Strength for melee, and Wisdom/Charisma for Force powers/Persuade.
- Feat Specialization: Choose feats that enhance your primary combat style (melee, ranged, Force powers) or provide essential utility. Don't spread your feats too thin.
- Companion Skills: Remember that your companions can also use their skills. You don't need to master every skill yourself. For example, T3-M4 is excellent with Computer Use and Repair.
- Situational Skills: While not always essential, skills like Demolitions can be very useful against certain enemy types or in specific environmental challenges.
By carefully planning your skill and feat progression, you can create a highly effective and versatile character capable of overcoming any challenge the Old Republic throws at you.
