Levels
In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, character progression is primarily driven by gaining experience points (XP) and leveling up. Each level gained allows your character to improve their core attributes, learn new skills, and select powerful feats, shaping their combat effectiveness and utility throughout the game.
The game features a level cap of 20. Players begin by choosing one of three basic classes: Soldier, Scout, or Scoundrel. After reaching a certain level within their basic class (typically between levels 2 and 8), characters undergo Jedi training and multiclass into one of three Jedi classes: Guardian, Sentinel, or Consular. This multiclassing system means your character will have levels in both a basic class and a Jedi class, with the total combined levels not exceeding 20.
Leveling Up Mechanics:
- Experience Points (XP): XP is awarded for defeating enemies, completing quests, discovering new locations, and succeeding in skill checks.
- Leveling Up: When you accumulate enough XP, your character levels up. This grants you a certain number of attribute points to distribute, skill points to allocate, and a feat or Force power to learn (depending on your class).
- Attribute Points: These points are used to increase your character's core attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Each attribute influences various aspects of your character, from combat damage to Force power effectiveness and skill success rates.
- Skill Points: Used to improve your character's skills, such as Computer Use, Demolitions, Stealth, and Treat Injury. Higher skill levels increase your chances of success when attempting related actions.
- Feats/Force Powers: At each level-up, you gain the opportunity to select a new feat or, if you are a Jedi, a new Force power. Feats provide passive bonuses or active abilities, while Force powers grant access to the mystical abilities of the Force.
Class Progression:
- Basic Classes (Soldier, Scout, Scoundrel): These classes define your character's initial strengths and weaknesses. Soldiers are combat powerhouses, Scouts are balanced survivors, and Scoundrels excel in stealth and technical skills.
- Jedi Classes (Guardian, Sentinel, Consular): These classes are unlocked after Jedi training and focus on Force abilities and lightsaber combat. Guardians are melee specialists, Sentinels are balanced Force-users, and Consulars are masters of Force powers.
Droid Companions:
Droid companions like HK-47 and T3-M4 have their own unique class progression. They gain levels independently and have fewer feat options, focusing on specialized droid upgrades and logic modules rather than traditional feats. They also cannot be healed by standard means, requiring repair kits.
Strategic allocation of attribute points, careful selection of skills, and wise choices in feats and Force powers are paramount to developing a powerful and effective character. Understanding the leveling system is key to mastering the challenges of Knights of the Old Republic.
