Character Classes
In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, your journey begins with a crucial decision: choosing your character's class. This choice sificantly impacts your starting abilities, skills, and how you approach combat and dialogue throughout the game. Each class offers a distinct playstyle, allowing for diverse character builds and role-playing opportunities. The three available classes are Soldier, Scoundrel, and Jedi.
Upon starting a new game, you'll customize your character's appearance and then select one of these foundational classes. While all characters can eventually learn Force powers if they become a Jedi, your initial class determines your starting attribute bonuses, feats, and proficiencies, shaping your early game experience and long-term development.
1. Soldier:
- Description: The Soldier is a master of conventional warfare, excelling in the use of blasters, heavy weapons, and armor. They are the frontline combatants, built for direct confrontation and resilience.
- Strengths: High combat proficiency, access to all armor types (light, medium, heavy), strong weapon specialization feats, and good fortitude.
- Weaknesses: Limited skills in areas like computer use or persuasion, and no innate Force abilities.
- Playstyle: Ideal for players who enjoy straightforward combat, tanking damage, and wielding powerful weaponry.
2. Scoundrel:
- Description: The Scoundrel is a charismatic and agile character, adept at stealth, persuasion, and exploiting enemy weaknesses. They rely on cunning, quick reflexes, and often dual-wielding blasters or vibroblades.
- Strengths: High Dexterity and Charisma, excellent skills in Persuade, Stealth, and Demolitions, bonus feats for critical hits and two-weapon fighting.
- Weaknesses: Lower hit points and armor proficiency (limited to light armor), less effective in prolonged direct combat.
- Playstyle: Suited for players who prefer a more tactical approach, using stealth, debuffs, and precise attacks to overcome enemies.
3. Jedi:
- Description: The Jedi class embodies the Force. While not available at the very start of the game (you become a Jedi later), choosing a starting class influences your Jedi path. If you choose Soldier or Scoundrel, you will later gain Jedi abilities. If you choose Jedi as your starting class, you begin with some Force powers and lightsaber proficiency.
- Strengths: Access to Force powers (Light Side or Dark Side), proficiency with lightsabers, and strong Wisdom and Charisma scores.
- Weaknesses: Limited armor choices (robes only), can be less proficient in non-Force combat compared to Soldiers or Scoundrels initially.
- Playstyle: For players who want to wield the Force, master lightsaber combat, and make choices that define their alment.
Your initial class choice sets the foundation, but remember that KOTOR allows for sificant character development. By strategically allocating attribute points, selecting feats, and acquiring new abilities, you can customize your character to fit your preferred playstyle, even blending elements of different archetypes as you progress.
