Endgame Content & Post-Story Activities

Congratulations, Starbounder! You've vanquished the Ruin, saved the universe, and witnessed the credits roll. But the adventure is far from over. Starbound's endgame offers a wealth of activities, from challenging boss rematches to deep crafting systems and expansive exploration, ensuring your journey continues long after the main story concludes.

Rematching the Ruin & Beyond

For those seeking to re-experience the epic final confrontation or test their mettle against a more formidable foe, the Ruin can be challenged again. However, the true endgame boss awaits:

The Ancient Guardian

The Ancient Guardian is Starbound's ultimate challenge, a colossal entity residing in the deepest reaches of the universe. Defeating it requires top-tier gear, strategic planning, and often, a well-coordinated team.

  • Accessing the Guardian: To summon the Ancient Guardian, you must first craft the Ancient Keys. These keys are assembled from Ancient Essence and Ancient Cores.
  • Ancient Essence Farming:
    • Ancient Vaults: The primary source. Access these by using Ancient Keys at the Ancient Gate on your ship. Each vault offers a unique challenge and rewards a significant amount of Essence upon completion.
    • Erchius Mining Facility (Hard Mode): Revisit the Erchius Mining Facility through your ship's navigation console. In hard mode, enemies drop Ancient Essence, albeit at a slower rate than vaults.
    • Cultist Camps: Occasionally, you'll encounter Cultist Camps on dangerous planets. These camps often contain chests with Ancient Essence.
  • Ancient Core Acquisition: Ancient Cores are rarer and typically found as drops from mini-bosses within Ancient Vaults or as rewards for completing particularly difficult planetary quests.
  • Summoning Location: Once you have enough Ancient Keys, navigate to the coordinates X: 0, Y: 0 in the Ancient Star System. This system is only accessible after completing the main story. Activate the Ancient Altar there to summon the Guardian.
  • Recommended Gear: Full sets of Solarium Star Armor or Aegisalt Armor are highly recommended. For weapons, consider Violium Broadswords, Durasteel Assault Rifles, or powerful unique weapons like the Asuterosaberu DX (found in Ancient Vaults). Bring plenty of Healing Water and Bandages, along with stat-boosting foods.

Advanced Crafting & Upgrades

The endgame opens up new tiers of crafting and allows you to truly perfect your equipment.

Augmenting Your Gear

The Augment Station, crafted at your Inventor's Table (Tier 3), allows you to apply powerful augments to your armor and weapons. Augments can grant bonuses like increased damage, health regeneration, energy regeneration, or specific elemental resistances.

  • Augment Acquisition: Augments are found as rare drops from high-tier enemies, within Ancient Vaults, or purchased from specific vendors in the Outpost after completing certain quests.
  • Applying Augments: Place your desired armor piece or weapon into the Augment Station, then select the augment you wish to apply. Be aware that some augments are mutually exclusive.

Legendary Weapon Forging

Discovering and forging legendary weapons is a significant endgame pursuit. These weapons often have unique abilities and devastating power.

  • Blueprint Hunting: Legendary weapon blueprints are exceedingly rare and can be found in Ancient Vaults, as drops from the Ancient Guardian, or sometimes from unique mini-bosses on dangerous planets.
  • Required Materials: Legendary weapons often require exotic materials like Solarium Star Bars, Ancient Essence, and specific rare monster drops.
  • Crafting Station: Most legendary weapons are forged at the Ancient Manipulator, a special crafting station found within Ancient Vaults or crafted after obtaining its blueprint.

Colony Management & Expansion

Your humble starter colony can evolve into a bustling hub of activity and a significant source of income and resources.

Tenant Tier Upgrades

By providing increasingly elaborate housing and furniture, you can attract higher-tier tenants who offer better rent and more valuable quests.

  • Requirements: Each tenant type has specific furniture and room size requirements. Consult the Colony Deed description for details.
  • Specialized Tenants: Seek out specialized tenants like Merchants (who sell unique items), Guards (who protect your colony), and Scientists (who offer research quests).
  • Rent Collection: Interact with your Colony Deeds regularly to collect rent, which often includes pixels, rare resources, or even unique items.

Building Grand Structures

With unlimited building potential, you can construct massive cities, intricate dungeons, or even entire space stations. Utilize the Matter Manipulator upgrades (obtained from the Tech Station on your ship) to increase its range and efficiency.

  • Wiring & Logic Gates: Experiment with wiring to create automated systems, traps, and complex contraptions. Acquire Wiring Tools and Logic Gates from the Pixel Compressor or certain merchants.
  • Terraforming: The Terraformer item (found in Ancient Vaults or crafted) allows you to change the biome of an entire planet, opening up new aesthetic and resource-gathering possibilities.

Exploration & Discovery

The universe is vast, and even after the main story, there are countless secrets to uncover.

Unique Planet Types

Beyond the standard biomes, the endgame introduces even more challenging and rewarding planet types.

  • Sulphuric Planets: Extremely hazardous, requiring Radiation EPP Augments and offering unique crafting materials.
  • Frozen Planets (Extreme): Require Heating EPP Augments and contain rare ice-based resources and creatures.
  • Volcanic Planets (Extreme): Demand Cooling EPP Augments and are rich in valuable ores and fire-resistant flora.

Hidden Dungeons & Encounters

Many planets harbor hidden dungeons, secret mini-bosses, and unique encounters that are not part of any main quest line.

  • Scanning for Anomalies: Use your Scanner tool to look for unusual energy signatures or structural anomalies on planet surfaces.
  • Lore & Codex Entries: Pay attention to environmental storytelling and collect Codex Entries to piece together the deeper lore of the Starbound universe, often hinting at hidden locations or events.

Farming & Resource Management

Efficient resource gathering becomes crucial for endgame crafting and colony expansion.

Automated Farms

Set up automated farms using Sprinklers, Planter Boxes, and even Wiring to ensure a steady supply of food and crafting ingredients.

  • Rare Seeds: Seek out rare seeds from unique plants on dangerous planets or as drops from specific monsters.
  • Animal Husbandry: Capture and breed various creatures using the Capture Pod to produce resources like Milk, Eggs, and Feathers.

Mining Expeditions

Upgrade your Matter Manipulator to its maximum potential for efficient mining. Focus on planets with high concentrations of Solarium Star Ore, Violium Ore, and Aegisalt Ore for top-tier gear.

  • Mining Tools: Consider crafting specialized mining tools like the Drill Spear or the Plasma Drill for faster resource extraction.
  • Teleporters: Establish Teleporter networks on resource-rich planets to quickly access mining sites and transport materials back to your ship or colony.
