Teleportation & Travel

Navigating the vast, procedurally generated universe of Starbound is a core aspect of your adventure. Understanding the various methods of teleportation and interstellar travel will save you countless hours and open up new possibilities for exploration, resource gathering, and questing. This section details every travel option available to you, from your initial escape pod to advanced planetary beaming.

Your Ship: The Hub of Your Universe

Your personal starship is not just a mode of transport; it's your mobile base of operations, crafting station, and primary means of interstellar travel. Upon starting a new game, you'll find yourself in a damaged ship, requiring repairs before you can venture beyond your starting system.

  • Ship AI (S.A.I.L.): Your ship's artificial intelligence, S.A.I.L., is your primary interface for all ship functions, including navigation, quest progression, and crew management. Interact with S.A.I.L. by clicking on its console.
  • Navigation Console: Located near S.A.I.L., the Navigation Console allows you to view the star map, select target systems and planets, and initiate FTL (Faster-Than-Light) jumps.
  • Teleporter Pad: This crucial device, found on your ship's bridge, is used to beam down to planets and back up to your ship. It's also your gateway to the Outpost and any custom teleporters you've placed.

Repairing Your Ship for Interstellar Travel

Initially, your ship is grounded. To unlock FTL travel and explore other star systems, you must complete the "Getting Started" questline provided by S.A.I.L. This involves:

  1. Collecting Core Fragments: These are found deep underground on your starting planet. You'll need to mine through various layers of dirt, stone, and possibly dangerous biomes to reach them. Aim for at least 20 Core Fragments.
  2. Activating the Ancient Gate: Once you have enough Core Fragments, locate the Ancient Gate on your starting planet (marked on your mini-map after collecting fragments). Place the fragments into the gate to activate it.
  3. Visiting the Outpost: Activating the gate will allow you to teleport to the Outpost, a central hub for quests, merchants, and important NPCs.
  4. Speaking with Esther Bright: On the Outpost, find Esther Bright. She will guide you through the next steps, which involve repairing your ship's FTL drive. This typically involves completing the "Erchius Mining Facility" mission, accessible from the Outpost's mission teleporter.
  5. Fueling Your Ship: After repairing your FTL drive, you'll need fuel to travel between star systems. The most common fuel source is Erchius Crystal, which can be mined from moons or purchased from the Infinity Express on the Outpost.

Planetary Teleportation

Once your ship is operational, beaming down to planets and back is straightforward. However, there are also advanced teleporter options for more efficient travel.

Standard Ship Teleporter

This is your primary method for reaching planetary surfaces.

  • Beaming Down: Stand on your ship's teleporter pad and interact with it. Select "Beam to Planet" from the menu. You will be transported to a random, safe location on the planet's surface, usually near the landing zone.
  • Beaming Up: While on a planet, you can beam back to your ship at any time by pressing the "Up" arrow key (default) or by using the "Beam Up" button in your inventory menu. Be aware that beaming up can be interrupted by damage.

Custom Teleporters

For establishing permanent travel points, custom teleporters are invaluable. These allow you to instantly warp between specific locations.

  • Crafting a Teleporter: You can craft a Teleporter at an Inventor's Table (Tier 2 or higher). The recipe requires 10x Steel Bar, 5x Silicon Board, and 1x Wire.
  • Placing a Teleporter: Place the crafted Teleporter on any solid block. Once placed, interact with it to "Register" it. You can give it a custom name for easy identification.
  • Using Custom Teleporters:
    • From Your Ship: Interact with your ship's teleporter pad. In addition to "Beam to Planet" and "Beam to Outpost," you will see a list of all registered custom teleporters. Select the desired teleporter to instantly warp there.
    • Between Custom Teleporters: If you have multiple custom teleporters placed, you can warp directly between them by interacting with one and selecting another from the list.
  • Teleporter Network: Consider creating a network of teleporters on important planets (e.g., your main colony, mining outposts, quest hubs) to drastically reduce travel time.

The Outpost Teleporter

The Outpost serves as a crucial hub in the Starbound universe. You can access it directly from your ship's teleporter pad at any time, once the Ancient Gate has been activated. The Outpost offers:

  • Mission Teleporter: This teleporter, located on the Outpost, allows you to access story missions and repeatable quests.
  • Merchants & Services: A wide array of vendors for weapons, armor, furniture, and resources.
  • Quests: Many important NPCs on the Outpost offer quests that advance the main storyline or provide valuable rewards.

Emergency Teleportation

In dire situations, an emergency "panic button" can save your life.

  • Emergency Teleport: If you are taking heavy damage or are about to die, pressing the "Up" arrow key (default) will initiate an emergency beam-up to your ship. This can be a lifesaver, but be aware that it has a short cooldown and can be interrupted by continuous damage.

Mastering these teleportation and travel methods is key to efficient exploration and progression in Starbound. Plan your routes, establish teleporter networks, and always keep an eye on your fuel gauge!
