Environmental Hazards & Survival
Starbound's universe is a beautiful, yet often deadly, place. Beyond the hostile fauna and aggressive NPCs, the very environments you explore can pose significant threats to your survival. Understanding and preparing for these environmental hazards is crucial for successful planetary exploration and resource gathering.
Temperature Extremes
Many planets feature extreme temperatures that will rapidly deplete your health if unprepared. These can range from scorching deserts to freezing tundras.
- Heat Protection:
- Early Game: For initial heat resistance, craft a Heat Protection EPP Module at your Inventor's Table (requires 10x Copper Bar, 5x Silver Bar, 3x Silicon Board). This provides basic protection.
- Mid-Game: Upgrade to a Heated EPP Module (crafted at an Atomic Furnace with 15x Titanium Bar, 10x Gold Bar, 5x Silicon Board, and the Heat Protection EPP Module). This offers superior heat resistance, suitable for most desert and volcanic biomes.
- Advanced: The Insulated EPP Module (crafted at a Separator with 20x Durasteel Bar, 15x Platinum Bar, 10x Silicon Board, and the Heated EPP Module) provides full immunity to heat.
- Armor Sets: Certain armor sets, like the Solarium Star Armor, offer inherent heat resistance. Combine these with an EPP for maximum protection.
- Cold Protection:
- Early Game: Craft a Cold Protection EPP Module at your Inventor's Table (requires 10x Iron Bar, 5x Tungsten Bar, 3x Silicon Board).
- Mid-Game: Upgrade to a Chilled EPP Module (crafted at an Atomic Furnace with 15x Titanium Bar, 10x Tungsten Bar, 5x Silicon Board, and the Cold Protection EPP Module). This is essential for icy and frozen planets.
- Advanced: The Insulated EPP Module (same as above) also grants full immunity to cold.
- Armor Sets: The Ferozium Armor set provides excellent cold resistance.
Atmospheric Hazards
Beyond temperature, some planets feature hazardous atmospheres that can inflict status effects or cause rapid health decay.
- Radiation:
- Protection: A Radiation EPP Module (crafted at an Atomic Furnace with 15x Titanium Bar, 10x Uranium Rod, 5x Silicon Board) is essential for exploring radioactive planets. Without it, you'll suffer from the "Irradiated" status effect, leading to constant health drain.
- Healing: Keep Antidotes or Medical Kits on hand to counteract radiation sickness if you're caught unprepared.
- Poison/Toxic Rain:
- Protection: The Poison Protection EPP Module (crafted at an Atomic Furnace with 15x Titanium Bar, 10x Venom Sample, 5x Silicon Board) prevents the "Poisoned" status effect from toxic environments or rain.
- Healing: Bandages and Salves can help mitigate poison damage, but prevention is key.
- Lack of Oxygen (Vacuum):
- Protection: For vacuum environments, such as asteroid fields or the void between planets, you'll need an Oxygen EPP Module (crafted at an Atomic Furnace with 15x Titanium Bar, 10x Graphene, 5x Silicon Board). This provides a breathable atmosphere.
- Alternative: The Breathing EPP Module (crafted at an Inventor's Table with 10x Copper Bar, 5x Silver Bar, 3x Silicon Board) provides a limited oxygen supply, suitable for short excursions or underwater exploration.
Environmental Damage & Traps
Some planets feature active hazards that deal direct damage or impede movement.
- Lava: Found on volcanic planets and deep underground. Contact with lava deals massive fire damage.
- Strategy: Avoid direct contact. Use a Matter Manipulator to clear paths or build bridges with heat-resistant blocks like Obsidian or Magmarock. A Heat Protection EPP Module can reduce damage, but won't make you immune.
- Tar: Slows movement significantly and can trap you, making you vulnerable to enemies.
- Strategy: Jump over tar pits or use a Matter Manipulator to remove it. Flying mounts or abilities like the Dash Tech can help traverse tar.
- Spikes/Thorns: Stationary hazards that deal damage upon contact.
- Strategy: Observe patterns, jump over them, or use your Matter Manipulator to remove them if they are block-based.
- Acid Rain/Acid Pools: Similar to poison, but often deals more direct damage and can be found in pools.
- Strategy: The Poison Protection EPP Module helps, but avoiding direct contact with pools is always best. Build shelters or use a Matter Manipulator to drain pools if possible.
General Survival Tips
- Always Check Planet Info: Before beaming down, always check the planet's description in your ship's navigation console. It will list primary threats like "Scorching," "Freezing," "Irradiated," or "Toxic."
- Carry Consumables: Always have a stack of Bandages, Salves, and at least one Medical Kit in your inventory. For radiation, Antidotes are vital.
- Upgrade Your EPP: Prioritize upgrading your Environmental Protection Pack (EPP). The higher-tier modules combine multiple resistances, saving you inventory space and providing comprehensive protection. The Augment Slot on your EPP allows for further customization, such as increased energy or light.
- Terraforming: For long-term bases on hostile planets, consider terraforming. Using a Terraformer (obtained from the Terramart) can slowly change a planet's biome and weather, making it more hospitable.
- Shelter: When exploring, especially on planets with hazardous weather, quickly building a small shelter with a door can provide temporary respite from environmental damage.
- Food and Water: While not a direct environmental hazard, hunger and thirst (if playing with survival mods) are crucial. Always carry several cooked foods and bottled water.
