Unique Planet Features
Beyond the standard biomes and resources, many planets in Starbound harbor unique features that can significantly impact your exploration, resource gathering, and even combat strategies. Identifying and understanding these anomalies is key to becoming a master explorer. This section will detail some of the most notable unique planet features and how to best interact with them.
Environmental Hazards & Opportunities
- Acid Rain/Toxic Oceans: Found predominantly on Toxic and some Lush planets, these environmental dangers can quickly deplete your health.
- Strategy: Always carry a supply of Bandages or Healing Water. For prolonged exposure, consider crafting an Environmental Protection Pack (found at the Anvil or Fabricator under "Armor") or equipping armor with high environmental resistance. Toxic oceans often contain unique aquatic life and rare resources like Poison and Slime, accessible with a Rebreather or by draining sections.
- Geysers (Steam/Lava): Common on Volcanic, Magma, and some Arid planets, these can launch you high into the air or deal significant damage.
- Strategy: Steam Geysers can be used for vertical traversal, saving on Grappling Hook or Jump Pack energy. Lava Geysers are dangerous; avoid direct contact. Both often indicate deposits of valuable ores like Durasteel Ore or Solarium Ore nearby.
- Meteor Showers: A rare but impactful event on various planet types, especially during nighttime. Meteors can destroy terrain and structures, but also drop valuable materials.
- Strategy: During a meteor shower, seek shelter underground or in a sturdy structure. Afterwards, scour the impact sites for Core Fragments, Solarium Ore, and sometimes even unique decorative blocks. Be wary of lingering heat or radiation.
- Zero Gravity Zones: Occasionally found in space encounters or within specific dungeons on certain planets. Movement is drastically altered.
- Strategy: Master your Jump Pack and Grappling Hook for precise movement. Melee weapons can be difficult to aim, so ranged weapons are often preferred. Look for hidden passages or loot accessible only with careful zero-G navigation.
Unique Structures & Dungeons
- Ancient Gates: These massive, inactive structures are found on every starter planet (Gentle Star, Temperate Star, etc.) and serve as a crucial quest objective.
- Activation: To activate an Ancient Gate, you must first complete the Erchius Mining Facility mission and acquire Erchius Fuel. Fueling the gate allows travel to the Ark.
- Buried Temples/Ruins: These can be found on almost any planet, often partially or fully submerged underground. They contain valuable loot and sometimes unique enemies.
- Strategy: Bring a powerful Matter Manipulator upgrade (e.g., Diamond Drill) for efficient excavation. Watch out for traps and environmental puzzles. These often house Relics, Tech Cards, or rare crafting components.
- Abandoned Settlements/Camps: These vary widely in appearance based on the race that inhabited them (e.g., Avian Tombs, Glitch Castles, Human Camps). They are excellent sources of lore, unique furniture, and sometimes even friendly NPCs.
- Strategy: Explore thoroughly! Check every container and breakable block. Many settlements have hidden passages or secret rooms containing valuable items or quest-givers. Be prepared for hostile inhabitants or environmental hazards.
- Fossil Excavation Sites: Marked by distinct rock formations and sometimes a small, abandoned research camp. These sites allow you to unearth Fossil Fragments.
- Strategy: You'll need a Fossil Brush (crafted at an Inventor's Table) to carefully excavate the fragments. Complete fossil sets can be displayed or sold for a good profit. Some sites may also contain rare ores or unique decorative blocks.
Special Biomes & Resources
- Tar Pits: Found on certain Forest or Jungle planets, these sticky pools slow your movement and can damage you over time.
- Strategy: Use a Jump Pack or Grappling Hook to traverse them quickly. Tar Pits are a primary source of Tar, a crafting material for various items, including certain building blocks and fuel.
- Bone Biomes: Unique to certain Barren or Dead planets, these biomes are characterized by massive skeletal remains and a desolate atmosphere.
- Strategy: Collect Bone for crafting decorative items or specific armor sets. Be wary of unique, often aggressive, skeletal creatures that inhabit these areas.
- Crystal Caves: Deep underground on many planet types, these glittering caverns are rich in Crystals and other valuable ores.
- Strategy: Bring a powerful light source, as these caves are often very dark. The crystals themselves can be harvested for crafting or sold. Keep an eye out for rare variants that may glow or have unique properties.
Remember, Starbound's universe is vast and procedurally generated. This guide covers common unique features, but always be prepared for unexpected discoveries and adapt your strategies accordingly!
