Quest Givers & Types
Quests are your primary method of progression and unlocking new technologies, recipes, and even expanding your ship in Starbound. Understanding who gives quests and the various types you'll encounter is crucial for a smooth and rewarding journey through the stars.
Main Story Quests: The Grand Galactic Adventure
These quests are the backbone of Starbound's narrative, guiding you from your escape from Earth to confronting the Ruin. They are given primarily by S.A.I.L., your ship's AI, and various key NPCs you encounter at the Outpost and during specific story missions.
- S.A.I.L. (Ship AI): Your initial quest giver. S.A.I.L. will guide you through the early stages, from repairing your ship's FTL drive to directing you towards the Outpost and your first main mission. Always check S.A.I.L. after completing a major objective or acquiring new technology.
- The Outpost NPCs: As you progress, you'll meet important characters at the Outpost who offer main story quests. These include:
- Esther Bright: The Protectorate's former Grand Protector. She is central to the main questline, providing missions that involve gathering artifacts and ultimately confronting the Ruin. Her quests often involve visiting specific planets and completing unique dungeon-like challenges.
- Koichi: The inventor at the Outpost, he'll sometimes offer quests related to upgrading your Matter Manipulator or other essential tools.
Walkthrough Tip: Main Story Progression
To advance the main story, always prioritize quests marked with a yellow exclamation mark (!). These will often lead you to unique mission instances accessible via your ship's navigation console. Be prepared for combat and environmental puzzles in these missions. Ensure your gear is up to par before attempting them.
Side Quests: Expanding Your Horizons
Side quests offer valuable rewards, including pixels, unique items, and sometimes even new crew members. They are given by a wide variety of NPCs across the galaxy.
Colony Deeds & Tenants
One of the most reliable sources of repeatable side quests comes from your own colonies. By placing a Colony Deed in a furnished room, you can attract tenants. These tenants will periodically offer quests.
- Tenant Quest Types:
- Fetch Quests: "I need 5 Copper Bars for a project!" or "Can you find me some Cotton?" These are straightforward and often involve common resources.
- Kill Quests: "There's a pesky Poptop causing trouble nearby, can you deal with it?" These require you to defeat a specific number or type of monster on the current planet.
- Delivery Quests: "Could you deliver this Mysterious Package to my friend on a nearby planet?" These require you to travel to a specific planet and locate another NPC.
- Rewards: Tenants often reward you with pixels, unique decorative items, or even join your ship as crew members if their happiness is high enough. Crew members provide various buffs and services.
Random NPC Encounters
As you explore planets, you'll frequently encounter NPCs in villages, dungeons, or even wandering in the wilderness. These NPCs, marked with a green exclamation mark (!), often have small tasks for you.
- Village Quests: In Apex, Avian, Floran, Glitch, Hylotl, and Human settlements, villagers will often ask for help with local issues. This could be anything from retrieving a lost item to clearing out a monster nest.
- Dungeon Quests: Some dungeons contain NPCs who are trapped or need assistance. Helping them often leads to unique rewards or opens up new paths.
The Outpost & Other Hubs
Beyond the main story, various NPCs at the Outpost and other hub areas (like the Ark) offer side quests that can unlock new crafting recipes, unique gear, or simply provide lore.
- Penguin Bay: The shady penguins at Penguin Bay sometimes offer quests related to acquiring specific weapons or items, often leading to unique rewards like the Penguin Weaponry.
- The Peacekeeper Station: Once unlocked, the Peacekeeper Station offers bounties and missions to hunt down dangerous criminals, providing significant pixel rewards and unique Peacekeeper gear.
Environmental Quests: Uncovering Secrets
Sometimes, quests aren't given by an NPC but are triggered by interacting with specific objects or locations in the world. These are often unmarked initially but become apparent once you interact with them.
- Lore Quests: Reading certain lore books, journals, or interacting with ancient structures can sometimes trigger a small quest to investigate further or find related items. These are excellent for uncovering the rich backstory of Starbound.
- "Lost Item" Quests: Occasionally, you might stumble upon a lost item (e.g., a Lost Wallet or a Mysterious Data Chip). Interacting with it might trigger a quest to find its owner or decipher its contents.
Strategy for Environmental Quests
Always be observant! Use your Matter Manipulator's scan mode (N key by default) on unusual objects or structures. Many secrets and hidden quests are revealed through careful exploration and interaction.
