Children
Having children in Stardew Valley is a heartwarming aspect of married life, adding a new layer of personal connection to your farm. After a certain period of marriage, your spouse may offer to have children, which grow and develop over time, bringing unique interactions and responsibilities to your farm.
The addition of children to your Stardew Valley farm is a significant milestone in married life, offering a charming and personal extension to your in-game family. Once married and settled, your spouse may express a desire to start a family, leading to the birth of your first child. These little ones grow and evolve, bringing new dynamics to your daily farm routine and offering unique interactions that deepen the player's connection to their virtual life.
Having Children
To have children, you must be married to one of the eligible bachelors or bachelorettes in Stardew Valley. After being married for at least 7 days, your spouse may initiate a conversation about having children. If you agree, your spouse will become pregnant (or you will become pregnant if you are playing as a female farmer and your spouse is male), and after approximately 14 in-game days, your first child will be born.
Types of Children
There are two types of children you can have:
- Biological Children: These are the children born from your marriage. They have distinct appearances and personalities.
- Adopted Children: If you are playing as a male farmer and your spouse is female, or vice versa, and you have already had one biological child, you can choose to adopt a second child instead of having another biological one. This option is also available if you choose not to have biological children.
Child Development Stages
Children in Stardew Valley go through several stages of development:
- Infant: For the first 7 days after birth, the child remains an infant and stays in a crib in your farmhouse. You cannot directly interact with them during this stage.
- Toddler: After 7 days, the infant becomes a toddler. Toddlers can move around the farmhouse and interact with certain objects. They will also begin to develop unique personalities and behaviors.
- Child: After approximately 14 days as a toddler, they become a child. Children can walk, run, and play. They will also have more complex interactions and may even bring you gifts or help with small farm tasks.
Interacting with Your Children
As your children grow, you can interact with them in various ways:
- Giving Gifts: You can give gifts to your children, though their preferences are not as clearly defined as adult villagers.
- Playing with Them: You can initiate a 'play' interaction with your toddler or child, which can increase their happiness and your relationship with them.
- Watching Them Play: Children will often play with toys, pets, or even wander around the farm.
- Receiving Gifts: As they grow, children may occasionally bring you small gifts, such as forageables or basic crafting materials.
Second Child/Adoption
After your first child becomes a toddler, your spouse may again initiate a conversation about having another child or adopting. You can choose to have a second biological child or adopt. If you choose to adopt, the child will appear as a toddler from the start.
The Dark Side of Children (Optional)
It's worth noting that You can choose to 'divorce' their spouse or have their spouse 'disown' them, which can lead to children being removed from the farm. This is an optional, darker path for players who wish to explore different aspects of the game's mechanics.
Having children in Stardew Valley adds a touching and personal dimension to the game, making your farm feel more like a lived-in home and offering a sense of accomplishment beyond just agricultural success.
