Fish & Forageables
The world of Stardew Valley is rich with natural resources, offering two primary avenues for early-game income, bundle completion, and energy replenishment: fishing and foraging. Mastering these skills can significantly boost your farm's profitability and help you progress through community goals.
Fishing: Rods, Reels, and Riches
Fishing in Stardew Valley is a mini-game that requires precision and practice. Your fishing level directly impacts the size of the "catch bar," making it easier to reel in fish. Higher levels also unlock new fishing rods and recipes.
Getting Started with Fishing
- Fishing Rods:
- Bamboo Pole: Received from Willy on your second day. It's basic but gets the job done.
- Fiberglass Rod: Available at Willy's Fish Shop for 1,800g once you reach Fishing Level 2. Allows the use of bait.
- Iridium Rod: The best rod, available at Willy's Fish Shop for 7,500g once you reach Fishing Level 6. Allows the use of both bait and tackle.
- Bait: Increases the bite rate of fish. Craftable (Fishing Level 2, 1 Bug Meat) or purchasable from Willy.
- Tackle: Attachments for the Iridium Rod that provide various benefits (e.g., Trap Bobber makes fish escape slower, Lead Bobber prevents the catch bar from bouncing off the bottom).
- Crab Pots: Placed in any body of water (ocean, river, lake) and baited to catch crustaceans and mollusks. Craftable (Fishing Level 3, 40 Wood, 3 Iron Bar) or purchasable from Willy. Essential for the Crab Pot Bundle.
Profitable Fish by Season & Location
Fish availability is highly dependent on the season, time of day, and weather. Here are some examples of highly profitable fish to target:
- Spring:
- River (Town/Forest): Largemouth Bass (Mountain Lake), Catfish (River, rainy days), Shad (River, rainy days).
- Ocean: Sardine, Herring, Anchovy.
- Summer:
- River (Town/Forest): Sunfish, Chub, Rainbow Trout.
- Ocean: Tuna, Red Snapper (rainy days), Pufferfish (sunny, 12 PM - 4 PM).
- Fall:
- River (Town/Forest): Walleye (rainy days), Salmon, Perch.
- Ocean: Eel (rainy days), Sea Cucumber, Super Cucumber (night).
- Winter:
- River (Town/Forest): Perch, Pike, Lingcod.
- Ocean: Halibut, Squid (night), Sea Urchin (forageable, but often found near fishing spots).
Legendary Fish
There are five unique Legendary Fish, one for each major fishing location, plus a sixth in Ginger Island. These can only be caught once per save file and are extremely challenging. They sell for high prices and are a testament to your fishing skill. Examples include the Angler (Fall, River, north of JojaMart) and the Crimsonfish (Summer, Ocean, east pier).
Forageables: Wild Harvests and Woodland Wonders
Forageables are wild items that spawn on the ground in various locations. They are an excellent source of early-game income and energy, especially before you have a steady farm income. The Foraging skill increases your chances of finding higher-quality items and unlocks useful crafting recipes.
Boosting Your Foraging Skill
- Axe Upgrades: Upgrading your axe allows you to clear larger stumps and logs, which often drop Hardwood and increase your Foraging XP.
- Professions:
- Level 5:
- Gatherer: 20% chance for double harvest of foraged items.
- Forester: Wood sells for 50% more.
- Level 10 (from Gatherer):
- Botanist: All foraged items are always Iridium quality. This dramatically increases their sell price and is highly recommended for maximizing foraging profits.
- Tracker: Shows the location of forageable items and artifact spots.
- Level 10 (from Forester):
- Lumberjack: All trees have a chance to drop hardwood.
- Tapper: Tappers are worth 25% more.
- Level 5:

Synergies and Strategies
- Early Game Income: Both fishing and foraging are excellent ways to earn money in your first spring and summer before your crops become highly profitable.
- Community Center Bundles: Many fish and forageables are required for the Community Center Bundles. Prioritize catching/collecting these items.
- Energy Management: Foraged items are great for restoring energy while exploring or mining, saving your valuable crops for selling.
- Selling vs. Processing: While selling raw fish and forageables is good, consider processing them for higher profits. Fish can be turned into Sashimi or Maki Rolls (requires kitchen), and many forageables can be turned into Jelly or Pickles using a Preserves Jar.
- Iridium Quality: The Botanist profession (Foraging Level 10) is a game-changer for foragers, ensuring all gathered items are of the highest quality, significantly boosting their sell price. This synergizes perfectly with the Gatherer profession at Foraging Level 5.
- Spring Onion Patch: In Spring, a large patch of Spring Onions appears south of your farm in Cindersap Forest. These respawn frequently and are an excellent early-game energy source and minor income.
By actively engaging with both fishing and foraging, you'll find yourself with a steady stream of income, valuable resources for bundles, and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of Stardew Valley.
