Axe

The Axe is one of the fundamental tools in Stardew Valley, essential for clearing your farm of trees, stumps, and logs. Its primary function is to chop down wooden obstacles, providing you with valuable wood resources and opening up more space for farming and building. Upgrading your Axe is crucial for efficiency, allowing you to clear larger obstacles faster and with less energy expenditure.

Your journey in Stardew Valley begins with a basic Axe, capable of felling small trees and breaking down smaller branches. As you progress, you'll want to upgrade this tool at the Blacksmith's shop. Each upgrade not only makes the Axe more powerful but also reduces the amount of energy consumed per swing, a vital consideration for long farming days.

Obtaining the Axe

You start the game with a basic Axe in your inventory. This initial tool is sufficient for clearing the initial debris on your farm. You'll find it automatically placed in your inventory when you arrive at your new farm.

Using the Axe

To use the Axe, simply equip it from your inventory and right-click (or the desated action button on a controller) on a tree, stump, or log. The effectiveness and speed at which you chop depend on the Axe's upgrade level and your character's energy.

Upgrade Paths and Benefits

The Axe can be upgraded twice at the Blacksmith's shop in town. Each upgrade requires a certain amount of Gold and a specific number of Ores.

Upgrade Level Cost (Gold) Ores Required Obstacles Cleared Energy Cost
Copper Axe 2,000 5 Copper Bars Small Trees, Branches 8
Steel Axe 5,000 5 Iron Bars Medium Trees, Stumps 6
Gold Axe 10,000 5 Gold Bars Large Trees, Large Stumps 4
Iridium Axe 25,000 5 Iridium Bars All Trees, All Stumps 2

Note: The Iridium Axe upgrade is not available at the Blacksmith. It is a special upgrade unlocked through other means, often related to late-game content or specific quests. The table above reflects the standard upgrades available at the Blacksmith.

Strategic Clearing

When clearing your farm, it's often beneficial to prioritize larger trees and stumps that yield more wood. Upgrading your Axe allows you to tackle these efficiently. Consider saving your wood for crafting, building, or selling. The Steel Axe is a significant upgrade, enabling you to clear stumps that were previously impassable. The Gold Axe makes clearing large trees much faster, and the Iridium Axe is the ultimate tool for rapid farm clearing.

Remember that upgrading tools takes time. You'll need to leave your Axe with the Blacksmith for two days. Plan your upgrades accordingly, perhaps during the winter season when farming is less intensive, or when you have a surplus of resources.
