Hoe
The Hoe is one of the essential starting tools in Stardew Valley, indispensable for preparing your farm for cultivation. It's used to till soil, creating arable land for planting crops. Upgrading your Hoe at the Blacksmith allows you to till multiple tiles at once, significantly speeding up the farming process and making larger planting endeavors much more manageable.
The Hoe is your primary tool for transforming the wild, untamed land of your farm into fertile ground ready for planting. Without it, you cannot sow seeds. Its functionality extends beyond simple tilling; it can also be used to clear debris like weeds and small rocks, and even to dig for artifacts in artifact spots. Upgrading the Hoe is a crucial step in optimizing your farming efficiency.
Using the Hoe
To use the Hoe, simply equip it and right-click on the ground. This will till a single tile of soil, preparing it for planting. Tilled soil will remain tilled until it rains or you use the Hoe on it again. You can plant seeds directly into tilled soil. The Hoe is also used to clear small rocks and weeds from your farm.
Tilling Multiple Tiles (Upgraded Hoe)
As you upgrade your Hoe at the Blacksmith, its functionality expands:
- Copper Hoe: Allows you to till a 3x1 area (three tiles in a row).
- Steel Hoe: Allows you to till a 3x3 area (nine tiles in a square).
- Gold Hoe: Allows you to till a 5x1 area (five tiles in a row).
- Iridium Hoe: Allows you to till a 5x5 area (twenty-five tiles in a square).
This upgrade dramatically increases your tilling speed, allowing you to prepare large sections of your farm for planting in a fraction of the time.
Upgrading the Hoe
To upgrade your Hoe, you must take it to Clint the Blacksmith. The upgrade process takes two in-game days. During this time, you will not have access to your Hoe, so plan accordingly. You will need the required ores (Copper, Iron, Gold, or Iridium) and a significant amount of gold. It's often best to upgrade tools during winter when farming is less active.
| Upgrade Level | Ores Required | Gold Cost | Days to Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | 5 Copper Bars | 2,000g | 2 |
| Steel | 5 Iron Bars | 5,000g | 2 |
| Gold | 5 Gold Bars | 10,000g | 2 |
| Iridium | 5 Iridium Bars | 25,000g | 2 |
Other Uses for the Hoe
Beyond tilling, the Hoe can be used to dig up artifact spots, which often yield valuable artifacts for the Museum or items that can be sold for profit. It can also be used to clear small rocks and weeds from your farm. In certain situations, like clearing pathways in the Mines, the Hoe can be surprisingly useful.
