Iron Pickaxe

The Iron Pickaxe is the second upgrade available for your pickaxe in Stardew Valley, significantly improving its efficiency. This upgrade allows you to break rocks faster and mine more valuable ores and gems, making it a crucial step in progressing through the Mines and unlocking new crafting recipes.

How to Obtain the Iron Pickaxe:

To upgrade your pickaxe to Iron, you must visit Clint, the blacksmith in Pelican Town. The process requires:

  • The Pickaxe: You must bring your current pickaxe (the Copper Pickaxe, which is the starting tool) to Clint.
  • Iron Ore: You will need 5 pieces of Iron Ore. Iron Ore is primarily found by mining in the Mines, typically starting from level 41 onwards. It can also be found in Iron Deposits on your farm after clearing debris, or occasionally purchased from the Traveling Cart.
  • Gold: You will need 2,000g to pay for the upgrade service.

The Upgrade Process:

1. Take your Copper Pickaxe to Clint's Blacksmith shop. The shop is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and during the Feast of the Winter Star.

2. Speak to Clint and select the "Upgrade Tools" option.

3. Select your Pickaxe from the available tools.

4. Provide the required 5 Iron Ore and 2,000g.

5. Clint will inform you that the upgrade will take two full days. During this time, your pickaxe will be unavailable. You can choose to leave your pickaxe for upgrading at any time, but it will take two days to complete. It's advisable to do this when you don't anticipate needing your pickaxe extensively, such as during a rainy day or when focusing on other farm tasks.

Benefits of the Iron Pickaxe:

  • Faster Mining: The Iron Pickaxe breaks rocks in fewer swings compared to the Copper Pickaxe, speeding up your mining efforts considerably.
  • Access to New Areas: While not strictly required for new areas, its efficiency makes navigating deeper levels of the Mines much more manageable.
  • Increased Ore Yield: Breaking rocks faster means you can mine more ore in a given amount of time.
