Scythe

The Scythe is one of your starting tools in Stardew Valley, essential for clearing fields and harvesting certain crops. While seemingly simple, understanding its use and potential upgrades can significantly improve your efficiency in preparing land and gathering resources. Master this fundamental tool for a smoother farm start.

The Scythe is a basic tool that you begin with at the start of your Stardew Valley journey. Its primary function is to clear weeds, grass, and other unwanted vegetation from your farm. It is also used to harvest certain crops, such as Wheat, Hay, and all forageable items that grow on your farm. Unlike other tools, the Scythe cannot be upgraded at the Blacksmith. Its effectiveness is determined by its base functionality. To use the Scythe, simply equip it from your inventory and click on the object you wish to cut. For weeds and grass, it will be instantly removed. For crops like Wheat, it will harvest the crop and yield the corresponding item. the Scythe will not damage or destroy planted crops that are not ready for harvest. One of the most crucial uses of the Scythe early in the game is for gathering Hay. When you have a Coop or Barn, you will need Hay to feed your animals. By using the Scythe on grass patches that have grown on your farm, you will collect Hay, which is then stored in your Silo. If you don't have a Silo, the Hay will go directly into your inventory. It's highly recommended to build a Silo as soon as possible to store excess Hay. Another important use is for clearing your farm to make space for planting crops. Weeds and fallen branches can clutter your farm, and the Scythe is the most efficient tool for removing them. You can also use the Scythe to harvest forageable items like Wild Horseradish, Leeks, and Daffodils that spawn naturally on your farm and in the surrounding areas. While the Scythe itself cannot be upgraded, its reach can be slightly extended by standing closer to the target. However, for larger-scale clearing or harvesting, you'll want to ensure you have a clear path. The Scythe is also useful in combat, though it's not its primary purpose. It can deal a small amount of damage to monsters, but you will quickly find more effective weapons for fighting. Remember to keep your Scythe in your hotbar for quick access, as you'll be using it frequently throughout the game, especially in the early stages of farm development and animal husbandry.
