Option Selects

Option selects (often abbreviated as "OS") are a sophisticated fighting game technique where a single input or sequence of inputs covers multiple potential outcomes from your opponent. They are desed to provide a favorable outcome regardless of what your opponent chooses to do, effectively "selecting" the best option for you based on their action.

The most common type of option select involves covering both a block and a throw attempt simultaneously. For example, a player might perform an attack that, if the opponent blocks it, will hit them. However, if the opponent attempts to throw through the attack, the player's input might also result in a throw escape or a move that beats the throw. This requires careful timing and understanding of the game's mechanics. Another common scenario involves covering both a throw and a jump. A player might perform an attack that, if the opponent blocks, leads to a combo. If the opponent tries to throw, the attack might beat the throw. If the opponent jumps to avoid the throw or attack, a well-timed anti-air normal or special move can catch them. The key to a successful option select is that your single input or sequence of inputs leads to a beneficial outcome for every possible defensive option your opponent might choose.

Implementing option selects effectively requires a deep understanding of your character's frame data, your opponent's common defensive habits, and the specific mechanics of Street Fighter 6. They are not foolproof and can sometimes be baited or punished if your opponent anticipates them. However, when used correctly, they can sificantly improve your offensive pressure and defensive security. Practicing these in training mode, by setting the dummy to perform various defensive actions like blocking, throwing, or jumping, is crucial. Mastering option selects can give you a sificant edge in neutral and pressure situations, making them a valuable tool for advanced players.
