Key Advanced Techniques:

  • Frame Data: Understanding frame data (startup, active, recovery frames) for each move is crucial. It tells you which moves are safe on block, which can be punished, and which can link into others. Use training mode's frame display.
  • Option Selects: These are inputs that cover multiple defensive or offensive situations with a single input. For example, an input that results in a block if the opponent attacks, but a throw if they don't.
  • FADC (Focus Attack Dash Cancel): After a Focus Attack, you can dash forward or backward by pressing forward/forward or back/back. This is vital for extending combos, making unsafe moves safe, or escaping pressure.
  • Kara Cancels: Canceling the very first few frames of a normal attack into a special move to extend its range. This is character-specific and requires precise timing.
  • Meaties: Timing an attack to hit an opponent as they are waking up from a knockdown. This forces them to block or risk being hit, creating strong pressure.
  • Cross-ups: Jumping attacks that hit the opponent on the opposite side as you land, making them difficult to block. Mastering these is key for opening up defensive opponents.
  • Tick Throws: Hitting an opponent with a light attack (a 'tick') and then immediately attempting a throw. The light hit pushes them slightly, making the throw harder to react to.

These techniques require significant practice in Training Mode, but their mastery will open up entirely new dimensions to your gameplay.
