This guide will equip you with the strategies and precise instructions needed to conquer its challenges and collect every elusive Cat Shine. Prepare for intense enemy encounters and clever environmental puzzles!
Recommended Power-Ups & Strategy
Before entering the Colosseum, it's highly recommended to stock up on several power-ups. The arena's dynamic nature benefits from both offensive and defensive capabilities. Consider the following:
- Super Bell (Cat Mario): Essential for climbing specific walls to reach secrets and for its powerful pounce attack. The Cat Claw attack is also excellent for clearing groups of smaller enemies.
- Boomerang Flower (Boomerang Mario): Invaluable for ranged attacks, especially against flying enemies or those positioned on ledges. It can also hit multiple targets in a line.
- Fire Flower (Fire Mario): Great for dealing consistent damage to multiple enemies and melting ice blocks if present.
- Super Star (Invincibility): A game-changer for surviving intense enemy waves or quickly clearing a path. Save these for dire situations or to speedrun a section.
- Super Mushroom (Growth): Always useful for an extra hit point.
General Combat Tips:
- Prioritize Threats: Focus on enemies that pose the most immediate danger (e.g., those with projectiles, large health pools).
- use the Environment: Look for opportunities to use walls, platforms, or even other enemies to your advantage.
- Dodge and Weave: Don't stand still! Keep moving to avoid enemy attacks and create openings.
- Ground Pound: Effective against many enemies, especially those with shells or when you need to quickly descend.
Cat Shine #1: Surviving the Enemy Rush
This Cat Shine is awarded for successfully defeating all waves of enemies within the main Colosseum arena. This is a multi-stage battle that requires quick reflexes and strategic power-up usage.
- Initial Encounter: Upon entering the main arena, you'll immediately be confronted by a group of Goombas and Koopa Troopas. Use basic jumps and attacks to clear them quickly. A Cat Claw attack or a Fireball works wonders here.
- Wave 2 - Flying Foes: Next, several Paragoombas and Lakitus will appear. The Lakitus will throw Spinies. Prioritize the Lakitus first, as they continuously spawn Spinies. A Boomerang Flower is highly effective here. Alternatively, jump on the Lakitu's cloud to take it out.
- Wave 3 - Heavy Hitters: This wave introduces larger, more resilient enemies such as Hammer Bros. and Sledge Bros. Keep your distance from the Sledge Bros. to avoid their ground pound shockwaves. Use Fireballs or Boomerangs, or get close with a Cat Pounce if you're confident.
- Wave 4 - Mixed Assault: The penultimate wave combines elements from previous waves, often including Magikoopas and more Hammer Bros. The Magikoopas will teleport and cast spells. Focus them down quickly to prevent them from multiplying enemies or making them invincible.
- Final Wave - Mini-Boss Encounter: The final challenge typically involves a mini-boss such as a Boom Boom or a Pom Pom, often accompanied by a few smaller enemies.
- Boom Boom: Wait for him to spin, then jump on his head. Repeat three times.
- Pom Pom: She throws a boomerang. Dodge it, then jump on her head when she's vulnerable. She'll often create clones; attack the one that doesn't disappear immediately. Repeat three times.
Once all enemies are defeated, the Cat Shine will materialize in the center of the arena. Collect it!
Cat Shine #2: Activating the P-Switch
This Cat Shine requires speed and precise platforming. It's located on the upper ledges of the Colosseum.
- Locate the P-Switch: From the main arena, look for a series of small, climbable walls on the perimeter. Using Cat Mario, climb the wall on the north-eastern side of the arena (facing away from the entrance).
- Reach the Upper Platform: Once on the first upper platform, follow the path around to the right. You'll see a small alcove with a P-Switch.
- Activate and Race: Hit the P-Switch. This will temporarily transform all nearby blocks into coins. You'll have a limited time to collect a specific number of these coins before they revert.
- Collect Coins: Immediately after hitting the switch, sprint and jump across the newly formed coin platforms. You'll need to collect at least 50 coins to make the Cat Shine appear. Don't hesitate; some coins are positioned over gaps, so precise jumps are crucial.
- Claim the Shine: If you collect enough coins within the time limit, the Cat Shine will appear on the final platform.
Common Pitfall: Missing jumps or taking too long will cause the coins to disappear, forcing you to retry. Practice the route without hitting the switch first if necessary.
Cat Shine #3: Finding the Hidden Blocks
This Cat Shine is cleverly concealed and requires keen observation and the right power-up.
- Locate the Hidden Block Area: Return to the main arena floor. Look towards the western wall (to your left when facing the entrance). You'll notice a section of the wall that looks slightly different, perhaps with a faint outline or a suspicious gap.
- use Cat Mario: You must be Cat Mario for this. Climb the western wall. As you climb, keep an eye out for a small, almost invisible ledge or a section where the wall texture seems to break.
- Reveal the Blocks: At a certain height (roughly halfway up the wall), perform a Cat Dive (ZL/ZR + B in mid-air) towards the wall. Alternatively, jump and then perform a Cat Claw attack (Y button) directly at the wall. This action will reveal a series of hidden blocks that form a staircase.
- Ascend to the Secret Area: Jump up the newly revealed blocks. They will lead you to a small, secluded platform high above the arena.
- Collect the Cat Shine: On this secret platform, you'll find the third Cat Shine waiting for you. There might also be a few bonus coins or a power-up block here.
Common Pitfall: Many players miss this Cat Shine because the hidden blocks are truly invisible until interacted with. Experiment with Cat Mario's wall actions in suspicious areas.
Bonus: Green Star Location
Clawswipe Colosseum also hides a Green Star for those who explore thoroughly.
- Find the Cracked Wall: After collecting Cat Shine #1 (Surviving the Enemy Rush), look around the perimeter of the main arena floor. On the southern side (opposite the entrance), you'll spot a section of the wall that appears cracked or slightly damaged.
- Break the Wall: To break this wall, you'll need a powerful attack.
- Ground Pound: Get on a higher platform (like the one for Cat Shine #2) and perform a powerful ground pound onto the cracked section below.
- Boomerang Flower: Stand at a distance and repeatedly throw boomerangs at the cracked wall.
- Super Star: If you have invincibility, simply run into the wall multiple times.
- Enter the Secret Chamber: Once the wall breaks, it reveals a small, hidden chamber. Inside, you'll find the Green Star.
By following these detailed instructions, you'll conquer Clawswipe Colosseum with ease, securing all its precious Cat Shines and the elusive Green Star. Good luck, and happy adventuring!
