Fort Flaptrap
Fort Flaptrap stands as a formidable, multi-tiered island fortress, presenting a significant challenge for even the most seasoned explorers of Lake Lapcat. This area demands precision platforming, strategic combat, and keen observation to uncover all its secrets. Prepare for elevated enemy encounters and intricate environmental puzzles.
Overview & Recommended Power-Ups
Fort Flaptrap is characterized by its verticality and the presence of numerous platforms, moving blocks, and enemy patrols. The Cat Suit is virtually indispensable here, not only for its wall-climbing abilities but also for its pounce attack, which can be invaluable against the more resilient foes you'll encounter. Having a few Super Bells in reserve is highly recommended. The Boomerang Flower can also prove useful for hitting distant targets or collecting hard-to-reach coins.
Cat Shine #1: Defeating the Fury Shadow
This Cat Shine is earned by confronting and defeating the Fury Shadow, a spectral version of Bowser that appears during a Fury Bowser attack. This encounter is unique to Fort Flaptrap and requires specific timing and strategy.
- Triggering the Fury Shadow: The Fury Shadow will only appear when Fury Bowser is actively attacking. Position yourself on the main, open platforms of Fort Flaptrap. As Fury Bowser unleashes his fiery breath or meteor showers, the Fury Shadow will materialize on one of the lower, more accessible platforms.
- Combat Strategy: The Fury Shadow mimics Bowser's attacks but is more vulnerable.
- Phase 1: The Fury Shadow will primarily use a ground pound attack. Dodge this, then quickly counter with a few hits. The Cat Suit's pounce attack is highly effective here, allowing you to close the distance and deal damage quickly.
- Phase 2: After taking some damage, the Fury Shadow will start to teleport more frequently and may summon smaller shadow minions. Prioritize defeating the minions first to clear the area, then focus on the Fury Shadow.
- Final Blow: Continue to dodge its attacks and land hits. Once its health is depleted, the Fury Shadow will dissipate, leaving behind the Cat Shine.
- Common Pitfalls: Don't get caught in Fury Bowser's external attacks while fighting the Fury Shadow. Keep an eye on the red targeting reticles on the ground. If you're struggling, try to lure the Fury Shadow to a more open area where you have better visibility of both threats.
Cat Shine #2: Climbing to the Top
This Cat Shine is a reward for reaching the absolute pinnacle of Fort Flaptrap, a feat that requires expert platforming and strategic use of the Cat Suit.
- Initial Ascent: From the main ground level, head towards the central structure of the fort. Look for climbable walls marked by their textured surfaces. Use the Cat Suit to scale these walls.
- Navigating the Mid-Levels: As you ascend, you'll encounter several ledges and platforms.
- Rotating Platforms: Some sections feature rotating platforms. Time your jumps carefully to avoid falling into the water below.
- Moving Blocks: Keep an eye out for blocks that extend and retract from the walls. Use these as temporary footholds.
- Enemy Encounters: Expect to find Hammer Bros and Fire Bros patrolling various ledges. Defeat them to clear your path, or skillfully dodge past them if you're low on health.
- The Final Climb: Near the top, you'll reach a section with a very tall, sheer wall. This is where the Cat Suit becomes essential. Perform a series of wall jumps and climbs to reach the highest accessible ledge.
- Collecting the Shine: Once you reach the very top platform, the Cat Shine will be waiting for you, often near a flagpole or a small, decorative structure.
Cat Shine #3: Collecting the Red Coins
This Cat Shine is awarded after successfully collecting all eight Red Coins scattered throughout Fort Flaptrap within a time limit. A Red Coin Ring will appear, and touching it initiates the challenge.
- Locating the Red Coin Ring: The Red Coin Ring typically appears on one of the lower, more central platforms of Fort Flaptrap. It's usually quite visible.
- Red Coin Locations (Clockwise from Ring):
- Coin 1: Immediately after touching the ring, jump to the platform directly in front of you.
- Coin 2: Head right from Coin 1, across a small gap, to a platform patrolled by a Goomba.
- Coin 3: Continue right, you'll need to jump over a small pillar or wall to reach this coin on an adjacent platform.
- Coin 4: From Coin 3, look for a moving block extending from the main fort wall. Jump onto it to grab the coin.
- Coin 5: After Coin 4, drop down to a slightly lower ledge. This coin is often near a Piranha Plant.
- Coin 6: From Coin 5, look towards the water. There's often a small, isolated platform or a block just above the water's surface with this coin.
- Coin 7: Climb back up a level using a Cat Suit wall climb. This coin is on a platform near a Hammer Bro.
- Coin 8: The final coin is usually on a higher platform, requiring a precise jump or a short Cat Suit climb from Coin 7's location. It's often near the path leading to the "Climbing to the Top" Cat Shine.
- Strategy & Tips:
- Cat Suit Advantage: The Cat Suit's enhanced mobility and wall-climbing are invaluable for quickly traversing the fort and reaching coins.
- Path Planning: Before touching the ring, quickly scout the area to mentally map out the most efficient route.
- Time Management: Don't linger on enemies unless absolutely necessary. Focus on collecting the coins.
- Practice: If you fail the first time, the coins will reset, allowing you to try again with a better understanding of their locations.
- Goombas & Koopa Troopas: Standard enemies, easily dispatched.
- Piranha Plants: Found on various ledges. Use fireballs or a well-timed jump attack.
- Hammer Bros & Fire Bros: These pose a greater threat with their projectile attacks. Prioritize defeating them, especially on narrow platforms.
- Fuzzy: These touch-damage enemies often patrol specific paths. Time your movements to avoid them.
- Moving Platforms & Blocks: These environmental hazards require precise timing and can lead to falls into the water.
- Water: Falling into the surrounding water will result in losing a life or a significant amount of time.
- Green Stars: Keep an eye out for hidden Green Stars. One is often found by hitting a hidden block or by completing a small, optional platforming challenge. Another might be behind a breakable wall (requiring a Super Bell's pounce) or inside a specific enemy.
- 1-Up Mushrooms: These are crucial for maintaining your life count. Look for them in less obvious corners or by defeating specific enemy formations.
- Coin Blocks: Standard coin blocks are scattered throughout, providing a steady supply of coins.
