Whomp King
The formidable Whomp King awaits at the pinnacle of Whomp's Fortress, serving as a sificant boss encounter. His primary attack pattern involves a powerful slam, where he plummets from a height, aiming to crush Mario beneath his immense weight. To successfully defeat this colossal foe, patience and precise timing are paramount. You must observe his attack, allowing him to complete his slam. The moment he lands and is momentarily vulnerable, quickly move onto his broad, flat back. Once positioned, execute a Ground Pound (achieved by pressing Z and then A simultaneously). This action will inflict damage upon the Whomp King. This process must be repeated a total of three times. After each successful Ground Pound, the Whomp King will momentarily recoil or change his attack pattern, often by leaping higher or moving more erratically before attempting another slam. Successfully landing three Ground Pounds will vanquish the Whomp King, clearing the path to a Power Star or advancing your progress within the fortress.
A common pitfall for players is attempting to attack the Whomp King directly or trying to hit him before he slams. This is ineffective and often results in Mario being crushed. The key is to wait for the slam and then capitalize on the brief window of opportunity. The height from which the Whomp King jumps can be deceptive, so judging the distance and timing your run onto his back is crucial. Some players might also struggle with the Ground Pound input, especially under pressure. Practicing the Z + A combination in a less critical situation can be beneficial. The arena where the Whomp King resides is typically open, but the edges can be a hazard, so maintaining a central position during the fight is advisable. Defeating the Whomp King is a rite of passage in Whomp's Fortress, demonstrating mastery of Mario's core offensive maneuver.
