Course 12: Tiny-Huge Island

Welcome to Tiny-Huge Island, a course defined by its unique size-shifting mechanic. You'll find two distinct entrances here, each leading to a different scale of the island. The left painting (Tiny Mario) shrinks you down, while the right painting (Huge Mario) makes you enormous. Mastering the transitions between these states is key to collecting all the stars.

Star 1: Pluck the Piranha Plant

This star requires you to be Tiny Mario. Enter the course through the left painting.

  1. From the start, head straight across the small bridge.
  2. You'll see a series of five sleeping Piranha Plants. Approach them carefully.
  3. To "pluck" them, simply walk up to each Piranha Plant and defeat it. A single punch or kick will do the trick.
  4. Once all five Piranha Plants are defeated, the star will appear in the center of their former location.

Star 2: The Tip Top of the Huge Island

For this star, you need to be Huge Mario. Enter the course through the right painting.

  1. From your starting position as Huge Mario, begin climbing the massive mountain.
  2. Follow the main path upwards, navigating around the large Goombas and Koopa Troopas.
  3. Utilize long jumps and wall kicks to scale steeper sections efficiently.
  4. Continue your ascent until you reach the very summit of the island.
  5. The star will be waiting for you at the highest point.

Star 3: Rematch with Koopa the Quick

This star involves another footrace with Koopa the Quick, similar to the one in Bob-Omb Battlefield. You can attempt this as either Tiny or Huge Mario, but Huge Mario is generally recommended for speed.

  1. Enter the course as Huge Mario (right painting).
  2. Locate Koopa the Quick near the starting area, usually by the large pond.
  3. Talk to him to initiate the race. The goal is to reach the flagpole on the opposite side of the island before he does.
  4. Take advantage of Huge Mario's longer stride. Use long jumps to cover ground quickly, especially over water sections.
  5. Be mindful of the large enemies; try to avoid engaging them directly to save time.
  6. Reach the flagpole first to claim your star.

Star 4: Five Itty Bitty Secrets

This star requires you to be Tiny Mario to access certain areas. Enter the course through the left painting.

You need to find and activate five "secret" spots, which are usually small platforms or specific ground patches that trigger an audible chime when stepped on.

  • Secret 1: Near the start, on the small patch of grass just before the first Piranha Plant.
  • Secret 2: After crossing the first bridge, on a small, raised platform to the left of the Piranha Plants.
  • Secret 3: In the area with the large pond, on a tiny island in the middle of the water. You'll need to jump carefully.
  • Secret 4: Near the cannon, on a small ledge overlooking the water.
  • Secret 5: On a small, elevated platform near the entrance to the cave that leads to the switch for the cannon.

Once all five secrets are triggered, the star will appear near the cannon.

Star 5: Wiggler's Red Coins

This star requires collecting 8 Red Coins. You'll need to switch between Tiny and Huge Mario for this, but it's generally best to start as Huge Mario to access the cannon.

  1. Red Coin 1 & 2 (Huge Mario): Enter as Huge Mario. Find the two Red Coins on the large, flat area near the start, usually guarded by Goombas.
  2. Red Coin 3 & 4 (Huge Mario): Climb the mountain slightly. There are two Red Coins on ledges or paths as you ascend.
  3. Red Coin 5 (Huge Mario): Find the cannon. To activate it, you must hit the "!" switch in the tiny cave (requires Tiny Mario to enter, then switch back to Huge). Once activated, use the cannon to shoot to the floating island. The coin is there.
  4. Red Coin 6, 7 & 8 (Tiny Mario): Switch to Tiny Mario (left painting).
    • Red Coin 6: In the small cave near the cannon switch.
    • Red Coin 7: On a small platform above the pond.
    • Red Coin 8: On a tiny ledge accessible by carefully jumping from the main path.

After collecting all 8 Red Coins, the star will appear in a central location, often near the cannon.

Star 6: Make Wiggler Squirm

This star involves a boss battle with Wiggler. You will need to be Huge Mario to fight him effectively.

  1. Enter the course as Huge Mario (right painting).
  2. Make your way to the top of the mountain.
  3. You'll find a large hole or pipe at the summit. Jump down into it.
  4. This will lead you to Wiggler's lair.
  5. Boss Strategy: Wiggler
    • Wiggler is a giant caterpillar. To defeat him, you need to stomp on his head three times.
    • He will charge at you. Lure him into a charge, then jump over him and stomp on his head as he passes underneath or after he turns around.
    • After each stomp, Wiggler will become enraged and move faster. Be prepared for quicker charges.
    • Avoid touching his body segments, as they will damage you.
  6. Once you've stomped on Wiggler's head three times, he will be defeated, and the star will appear.

Star 7: 100 Coin Star

Collecting 100 coins on Tiny-Huge Island can be challenging due to the size changes. It's recommended to start as Huge Mario to collect the majority of coins, then switch to Tiny Mario for the smaller, more concentrated coin clusters.

  • Huge Mario Coins:
    • Many Goombas on the huge island drop coins when defeated (1 coin each).
    • There are numerous coin trails and individual coins scattered across the large paths and ledges of the huge island.
    • The cannon area and the floating island accessible by cannon have several coins.
    • The large pond has a few coins underwater.
  • Tiny Mario Coins:
    • The Piranha Plants (Star 1) each drop coins when defeated.
    • There are several coin rings and lines on the tiny island, especially around the initial area and near the tiny cave.
    • The small enemies (e.g., Koopa Troopas) on the tiny island also drop coins.
    • The "Five Itty Bitty Secrets" often have coins nearby or are part of coin clusters.

Focus on clearing out areas thoroughly before switching sizes. Remember to collect the 8 Red Coins, as they contribute 16 coins to your total. The star will appear once you hit 100 coins, regardless of your current size.
