While all four characters in Super Mario Bros. 2 can complete the game, mastering their unique abilities can sificantly alter your approach to challenges and unlock more efficient playstyles. Mario is the balanced character, with average jumping height and running speed. His strength lies in his versatility, making him a reliable choice for most situations. However, for speedruns or tackling difficult platforming sections, other characters often excel. Luigi boasts the highest jump in the game, allowing him to reach platforms inaccessible to others and clear large gaps with ease. This makes him invaluable in levels with sificant verticality or wide chasms. His drawback is his slippery movement and somewhat awkward control, requiring practice to master his momentum. Princess Peach possesses the unique ability to float by pressing the jump button repeatedly in mid-air. This allows for unparalleled control over descents and the ability to traverse long horizontal gaps with precision. Her float is also excellent for waiting out enemy patterns or carefully positioning yourself for an attack. However, her jump height is lower than Mario's and Luigi's, and her movement can feel slower when not utilizing her float. Toad is the fastest character on the ground and can also pick up and throw items faster than anyone else. This makes him ideal for quickly clearing enemies, collecting items, or completing timed challenges. His jump height is comparable to Mario's, but he lacks the aerial maneuverability of Luigi or Peach.

When facing specific challenges, character choice becomes paramount. For World 5-3, a level known for its treacherous platforming over bottomless pits, Peach's float is almost essential for safe passage. Conversely, World 3-1, with its numerous vertical climbs and slippery platforms, is a prime candidate for Luigi's high jump. In boss battles, Toad's faster item-throwing speed can be a sificant advantage, allowing for quicker damage output. For example, against Fryguy, a faster rate of bomb throws can shorten the fight considerably. Even in seemingly simple levels, utilizing character strengths can lead to faster completion times and higher scores. For instance, a skilled Luigi player can bypass many ground-based obstacles with well-timed jumps, while a proficient Peach player can navigate complex aerial sections with minimal risk. Experimenting with different characters in each world and level will reveal optimal strategies and enhance your overall understanding of the game's mechanics.
