Enemies
The world of Subcon is teeming with unique and often quirky adversaries. Understanding their patterns and weaknesses is key to navigating this dreamscape. Remember, in Super Mario Bros. 2, direct stomping is rarely an option; instead, you'll be picking up and throwing, or using items to clear your path.
Standard Foes
These are the common enemies you'll encounter throughout your adventure. Mastering their defeat will be crucial for survival and progress.
- Shy Guy:
- Appearance: Small, hooded figures that walk back and forth.
- Strategy: The most basic enemy. Simply pick them up and throw them. They can be thrown at other enemies, into chasms, or just off-screen. They are a good source of health if you're low, as they often drop hearts when defeated.
- Locations: Found in nearly every world, from the grassy plains of World 1-1 to the icy caverns of World 5.
- Snifit:
- Appearance: Similar to Shy Guys, but they wear a mask with a long snout and shoot projectiles.
- Strategy: Snifits shoot small, slow-moving projectiles. You can pick them up and throw them like Shy Guys. Alternatively, you can pick up their projectiles mid-air and throw them back, or at other enemies. This is a great way to clear multiple foes at once.
- Locations: Common in World 1-2, World 2-1, and various later stages.
- Beezo:
- Appearance: Red, winged creatures that fly in specific patterns, often carrying spears.
- Strategy: Beezos fly in straight lines or gentle arcs. They can be tricky to grab due to their aerial movement. Wait for them to descend to your level, then quickly grab and throw. They can also be defeated by throwing other enemies or items at them. Be cautious of their spears, which can damage you if you touch them.
- Locations: Frequently encountered in World 1-3, World 3-1, and other sky-themed levels.
- Ninji:
- Appearance: Small, black, star-shaped creatures that hop erratically.
- Strategy: Ninjis are agile and their unpredictable hops can make them difficult to grab. Time your approach carefully. They are easily defeated once picked up and thrown. They often appear in groups, so consider using a turnip or another enemy to clear several at once.
- Locations: Prominent in World 1-1, World 2-2, and many underground sections.
- Panser:
- Appearance: Large, green, plant-like enemies that spit fireballs.
- Strategy: Pansers are stationary but dangerous. They spit three fireballs in quick succession. The best strategy is to pick up a nearby item (like a turnip or another enemy) and throw it at their head when they are not spitting fire. Alternatively, if you're playing as Luigi, his higher jump can sometimes allow you to jump over their fire and land a throw.
- Locations: Often found guarding key areas in World 1-3, World 2-3, and later worlds.
- Albatoss:
- Appearance: Large, white birds that fly across the screen, sometimes carrying bombs.
- Strategy: Albatosses are primarily a platform. You can jump on their backs to cross large gaps. If they are carrying a bomb, you can pick up the bomb and throw it at other enemies or even the Albatoss itself to defeat it. Be careful not to be on their back when they drop a bomb!
- Locations: Crucial for traversing gaps in World 3-1 and World 4-2.
- Phanto:
- Appearance: A floating, mask-like enemy that pursues you relentlessly when you pick up a key.
- Strategy: Phantos cannot be defeated. Your only option is to outrun them. Once you pick up a key, Phanto will appear and chase you until you use the key to open a locked door. If you drop the key, Phanto will stop chasing you until you pick it up again. Prioritize speed and know the path to the locked door when dealing with Phanto.
- Locations: Appears whenever a key is present, such as in World 1-3 and World 3-3.
Mini-Bosses & Recurring Threats
These larger or more resilient enemies require specific tactics to overcome.
- Birdo:
- Appearance: A large, pink dinosaur-like creature that shoots eggs (or fireballs) from its mouth.
- Strategy: Birdo is the guardian of many levels. The primary method to defeat Birdo is to catch the eggs it spits and throw them back at its head. It takes three hits to defeat a standard Birdo. Some Birdos will spit fireballs instead of eggs; for these, you'll need to find a nearby item (like a mushroom block or a turnip) to throw. Luigi's higher jump can be advantageous for catching eggs over obstacles.
- Locations: Appears at the end of many levels, including World 1-1, World 1-2, World 2-1, and more.
- Triclyde:
- Appearance: A three-headed snake that spits fireballs.
- Strategy: Triclyde is a stationary boss that spits fireballs from all three heads. You'll need to find nearby Mushroom Blocks or other throwable items and toss them at its heads. It takes multiple hits to defeat. Be mindful of the fireballs, which can be difficult to avoid in close quarters.
- Locations: Boss of World 2-3.
- Mouser:
- Appearance: A large, sunglasses-wearing mouse who throws bombs.
- Strategy: Mouser throws bombs that explode after a short fuse. The key is to pick up these bombs before they explode and throw them back at Mouser. He takes multiple hits to defeat. Be aware of the environment; sometimes there are platforms or walls that can block your throws.
- Locations: Boss of World 1-3 and World 3-3.
- Fryguy:
- Appearance: A large, fiery creature that splits into smaller flames when hit.
- Strategy: Fryguy is a unique boss. When you hit the main Fryguy with a throwable item (like a Mushroom Block), it will split into four smaller flames. You must then hit each of these smaller flames with another item to defeat them. The smaller flames move erratically, making them harder to hit.
- Locations: Boss of World 4-3.
