Mario: The all-around balanced character. Mario has average jumping ability and speed, making him a reliable choice for most situations. He's a good pick for beginners learning the ropes.
Luigi: The high-jumper. Luigi boasts the highest jump in the game, allowing him to reach platforms and secrets inaccessible to others. His slightly floatier jump can take some getting used to, but it's invaluable for vertical progression.
Toad: The strongman. Toad is the fastest character and can pull up items and vegetables quicker than anyone else. His downside is his short jump, making precise platforming more challenging. Use him for speedruns or when you need to quickly clear enemies.
Princess Peach: The glider. Peach can float for a short period after jumping, making her excellent for traversing wide gaps or recovering from misjudged leaps. While her jump height and item-pulling speed are average, her gliding ability offers unparalleled aerial control.

Essential Items & Strategies

Vegetables: These are your primary weapon. Pull them from the ground (by standing over them and pressing 'B') and throw them at enemies. Different vegetables have different trajectories and damage. Some larger vegetables require more effort to pull.
Potions: These mystical bottles, often found by pulling up specific plants or in hidden areas, create a temporary "Sub-Space" door. Entering Sub-Space transforms the current screen into a dark, mirror-image version where you can find Coins and, most importantly, Mushrooms.
- Mushroom Locations: Each world contains hidden Mushrooms that increase your maximum health. Finding these is vital for increasing your survivability, especially in later worlds. Look for suspicious patches of ground or specific plants that yield Potions.
Cherries: Collect five Cherries on a single screen to make a Starman appear. The Starman grants temporary invincibility, allowing you to run through enemies and hazards without taking damage. Use this strategically to clear difficult sections or defeat multiple foes.
Magic Carpet: Occasionally found in certain stages, the Magic Carpet allows you to fly over obstacles and enemies for a limited time. These are often crucial for reaching high platforms or bypassing dangerous sections.
