Unlike modern titles, Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES does not feature an automatic save system or a manual save option accessible at any point. Saving your progress requires a specific action after completing a set of levels. Understanding this mechanic is crucial for any player looking to conquer Subcon without losing valuable progress.

How to Save Your Progress

The only way to save your game in Super Mario Bros. 2 is by successfully defeating a boss at the end of a World. Each World in the game consists of three stages, culminating in a boss encounter. Once you defeat the boss, the game will prompt you with a save option.

1. Complete a World: Navigate through the three stages of any given World (e.g., World 1-1, 1-2, 1-3).
2. Defeat the Boss: At the end of the third stage of each World, you will face a boss character. For example, in World 1, you'll encounter Mouser.
3. Access the Save Screen: After successfully defeating the boss and watching the celebratory animation, the game will transition to a screen offering you the choice to "Continue" or "Save."
4. Select "Save": Use the directional pad to highlight "Save" and press the A button. Your progress will then be recorded.
