Scoring System
While Super Mario Bros. 2 doesn't feature a traditional score counter displayed during gameplay like its predecessor, there's a hidden scoring system that influences your end-of-level rewards and overall progress. Mastering this system is key to maximizing your chances of earning extra lives and collecting valuable items in the bonus game.
Collecting Coins
Coins are the primary method of accumulating points in Super Mario Bros. 2. Unlike other Mario titles, coins don't directly grant 1-Up Mushrooms after a certain number. Instead, they are crucial for the end-of-level slot machine mini-game.
- Standard Coins: Most coins are found by plucking them from the ground, often in groups of one to three. Each coin collected contributes to your total.
- Sub-Space Coins: Entering Sub-Space (by pulling up a Potion and placing it) often reveals hidden coins or coin plants. Prioritize collecting these, as they are a reliable source of points.
- Coin Plants: Some plants, when plucked, will yield a stream of coins. Stand directly over the spot where the plant was and repeatedly press the action button to collect as many as possible before they disappear.
- Enemy Drops: Certain enemies, when defeated, may drop a coin. This is less common but still contributes to your score.
Strategy: Aim to collect as many coins as possible in each stage. A good target is at least 5-7 coins per stage to ensure you get multiple plays on the slot machine.
The End-of-Level Slot Machine
At the end of each stage, before entering the hawk-head door, you'll find a slot machine. This is where your collected coins come into play. Each coin you've gathered during the stage grants you one pull on this slot machine.
Slot Machine Mechanics
The slot machine has three reels, each displaying various fruits and a "7" symbol. Your goal is to match symbols across the reels to earn rewards.
- Pulling the Lever: Stand in front of the slot machine and press the action button (A or B) to pull the lever. Each pull consumes one of your collected coins.
- Stopping the Reels: Press the action button again to stop each reel individually. Timing is crucial here.
Rewards Table
The rewards you receive depend on the combination of symbols you land:
| Combination | Reward | Strategy Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Three Cherries | 1-Up Mushroom | The easiest 1-Up to achieve. Focus on landing the first cherry, then time the next two. |
| Three "7"s | 2-Up Mushrooms | The highest reward! Requires precise timing. If you see a "7" on the first reel, go for it. |
| Three Coins | 1-Up Mushroom | A decent reward. Coins appear frequently, making this a common match. |
| Three Hearts | 1-Up Mushroom | Another good 1-Up combination. Hearts are slightly less common than cherries or coins. |
| Three BAR symbols | 1-Up Mushroom | Similar to hearts, a solid 1-Up. |
| Two Matching Symbols (e.g., Cherry-Cherry-Any) | No Reward | While not a direct reward, getting two matching symbols means you were close! Keep practicing your timing. |
| No Matching Symbols | No Reward | Better luck next time! |
Optimal Strategy for Slot Machine:
- Prioritize "7"s: If you see a "7" on the first reel, try to stop it. Landing three "7"s is the best outcome.
- Focus on Cherries: Cherries are relatively common and a good fallback for a 1-Up.
- Rhythm is Key: Each reel spins at a consistent speed. Try to develop a rhythm for stopping them. Many players find success by waiting for a specific visual cue (e.g., the symbol just before the one they want) to press the button.
- Practice Makes Perfect: The slot machine is entirely skill-based. The more you play, the better your timing will become. Don't be discouraged by initial failures.
By diligently collecting coins and honing your slot machine skills, you can significantly boost your life count and make your journey through Subcon much smoother!
