Sub-Space is not just for finding Mushrooms; it can be strategically exploited for various advantages. When you enter Sub-Space, all enemies on the screen are temporarily frozen, and you are invincible. This can be used as a brief safe haven in chaotic situations. Furthermore, any vegetables or items you pull up in Sub-Space will be replaced when you return to the main world. This means you can pull up a Potion, use it to enter Sub-Space, collect a Mushroom, and then return to the main world to find the Potion spot refreshed, potentially allowing you to get multiple Mushrooms from a single location if you're quick. Experiment with Potion placement to find hidden 1-Ups or warp zones.
