World 3: Ocean Side
Welcome to World 3, the Ocean Side! This world introduces several water-based levels and enemies, so be prepared for some aquatic challenges. Having a Super Leaf or Frog Suit in your inventory can make a significant difference here. The Frog Suit, in particular, grants superior swimming control and speed, making underwater sections much easier.
World 3-1
This level is a classic land-based stage with a few twists. You'll encounter Goombas and Koopa Troopas. Keep an eye out for a hidden 1-Up Mushroom early on. After the first pipe, jump on the second block from the left in the row of blocks above to reveal it. Further into the level, you'll find a section with a series of P-Blocks. Hitting the correct P-Block will reveal a hidden path to a Coin Heaven area, offering a good opportunity to stock up on coins.
World 3-2
Get ready to dive in! World 3-2 is primarily an underwater level. You'll face Cheep Cheeps and Bloopers. The key to success here is mastering your swimming. Holding 'A' will make Mario swim upwards. Conserve your air bubbles by not constantly swimming. There's a hidden Starman in a block near the beginning, which can help you clear a path through the initial enemies. Look for a pipe that leads to a small bonus area with a few coins and a Super Mushroom if you need it.
World 3-3
This level is a mix of land and water segments. You'll start on land, dealing with Hammer Bros. and Piranha Plants. A well-timed jump or a Fire Flower can make quick work of the Hammer Bros. After a short land section, you'll enter the water. Be wary of the currents, which can push you around. There's a hidden block containing a Super Leaf above a group of three blocks in the underwater section; this can be incredibly useful for the upcoming levels. Towards the end, you'll encounter a vertical pipe that leads to a small bonus room with a 1-Up Mushroom if you manage to reach the top.
World 3-4
Another challenging underwater level awaits! This stage features more aggressive Cheep Cheeps and a few Big Bertha fish that can swallow Mario whole. Staying agile and avoiding direct confrontations is often the best strategy. There's a hidden Frog Suit in a block about halfway through the level, which is highly recommended for navigating this stage and future water levels. Look for a single block floating near the top of the screen in a relatively open area. The Frog Suit will significantly improve your maneuverability and speed, making it easier to dodge enemies and strong currents.
World 3-Fortress
This fortress introduces the Dry Bones enemy, which can only be temporarily defeated. You'll also encounter Thwomps, so time your movements carefully. The fortress features several tricky jumps over lava pits. There's a hidden Super Leaf in a block above the second lava pit, which can help you float over some of the more difficult gaps. The boss of this fortress is Boom Boom. To defeat him, jump on his head three times. He will occasionally fly, so be prepared to jump to meet him.
World 3-5
This is a land level with a strong focus on platforming over gaps and avoiding Piranha Plants. You'll encounter a few Koopa Troopas and Goombas. There's a hidden Starman in a block near the beginning, which can help you clear the initial enemies and gain some momentum. Look for a series of moving platforms that require precise timing to navigate. At the end of the level, before the goal, there's a hidden block containing a Super Mushroom.
World 3-6
Prepare for a vertical ascent! This level involves climbing upwards, often with scrolling screens. You'll encounter Lakitus throwing Spinies, and some Piranha Plants. A Fire Flower can be very effective against Lakitus. There's a hidden 1-Up Mushroom in a block near the top of the level, just before the final descent. Look for a single block that stands out from the others. The level culminates in a series of platforms that lead to the goal.
World 3-Airship
The Airship is a classic scrolling level with several hazards. You'll face Rocky Wrenches popping out of pipes, cannons firing Bullet Bills, and fire bars. Having a Super Leaf or Fire Flower is highly recommended for this stage. The Super Leaf allows you to fly over many obstacles, while the Fire Flower can clear out Rocky Wrenches from a distance. The boss of the Airship is one of Bowser's Koopalings. Each Koopaling has a unique attack pattern, but the general strategy is to jump on their head three times. Be mindful of their magic attacks and the moving platforms.
Toad Houses
- Toad House 1: Located after World 3-1. Offers a choice between a Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Super Leaf.
- Toad House 2: Located after World 3-4. Offers a choice between a Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Frog Suit. The Frog Suit is a great pick if you don't have one already!
Hammer Bros. Encounters
- There are two Hammer Bros. on the World 3 map. Defeating them will reward you with a useful item. The first one, near World 3-2, often drops a Super Leaf. The second, located near World 3-5, frequently drops a Fire Flower.
White Mushroom House
To unlock the White Mushroom House in World 3, you must collect 44 coins in World 3-8. This house contains a valuable Anchor, which prevents the Airship from moving after you defeat the Koopaling, allowing you to replay the Airship stage if you wish.
