Mini-Games & Card Matching
Beyond the main stages, Super Mario Bros. 3 offers several engaging mini-games and bonus opportunities that can significantly impact your journey. Mastering these can net you valuable power-ups, extra lives, and even shortcuts. This section details how to best approach each of these diversions.
Toad's Houses
Toad's Houses are your primary source for power-ups and are scattered across the world maps. You can usually access one after completing certain stages or by using a Hammer item on the map to clear a path. There are two main types of Toad's Houses, each offering a different mini-game:
Item-Granting Toad's Houses
These houses are marked with a mushroom icon. Inside, you'll find three treasure chests. Your goal is to choose one, and it will reveal a power-up. While the choice is random, there's a trick to maximize your chances of getting a specific item:
- Strategy: The items in the chests are pre-determined when you enter the house. There's no way to influence the outcome once you're inside. However, if you're looking for a specific item (like a Super Leaf or Fire Flower) and don't get it, you can exit the house and re-enter if you have another Toad House available on the map (though this is rare for the same house). Otherwise, accept your prize and move on.
- Common Items: Expect to find Super Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, and Super Leaves most frequently. Occasionally, you might get a Starman or even a Hammer Suit in later worlds.
Card Matching Toad's Houses
These houses are marked with a "N" on the map and offer a memory-based card matching game. Winning this game grants you a power-up. You get two attempts to match pairs.
- Gameplay: You'll see 18 face-down cards arranged in a 6x3 grid. Each card has a matching pair. You flip two cards at a time. If they match, they disappear, and you get points. If they don't, they flip back over.
- Strategy:
- Memorize Initial Flips: On your first turn, focus on remembering the location of the first two cards you flip, regardless of whether they match.
- Systematic Approach: Start from one corner (e.g., top-left) and systematically flip cards. Don't just randomly click.
- Prioritize Known Pairs: Once you've seen a card and its location, if you later flip its match, immediately go back and select the first card to form the pair.
- Visual Cues: Pay attention to the distinct artwork on each card (e.g., Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Starman, 1-Up Mushroom, Coin).
- Practice: The layout of the cards is somewhat randomized, but the types of items are consistent. The more you play, the better you'll become at quickly identifying and remembering locations.
- Rewards: Successfully matching pairs will award you with items such as Super Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Super Leaves, and occasionally a Starman or even a 1-Up Mushroom. Matching all pairs within two tries guarantees a good item.
Matching Game (End of Stage Bonus)
At the end of every regular stage, you'll encounter a rotating block with three sections: a Super Mushroom, a Fire Flower, and a Starman. Jumping and hitting this block will reveal one of these items. The goal is to collect three matching items to earn extra lives.
- Gameplay:
- First Card: Hit the block to reveal your first card.
- Second Card: Hit the block again for your second card.
- Third Card: Hit the block one last time for your third card.
- Strategy:
- Timing is Key: The block rotates at a consistent speed. To get a specific item, you need to time your jump precisely. Observe the rotation pattern. For example, if you want a Super Mushroom, wait until the Mushroom is about to appear on the front face of the block as you jump.
- Matching for Lives:
- Three Super Mushrooms: Awards 2 extra lives.
- Three Fire Flowers: Awards 3 extra lives.
- Three Starmen: Awards 5 extra lives.
- Mixed Cards: If you get a mix of cards (e.g., Mushroom, Fire Flower, Starman), you'll receive 1 extra life.
- Prioritize Starmen: If you're confident in your timing, aiming for three Starmen is the most lucrative option for extra lives.
