Stocking up on lives is crucial for tackling the later worlds. Super Mario Bros. 3 offers several ways to gain infinite 1-Ups, allowing you to play without fear of a Game Over.

- World 1-2 Koopa Shell Trick: In World 1-2, after entering the first pipe to the underground, you'll find a single Koopa Troopa walking on a small platform. If you can stomp the Koopa and then kick its shell against a wall, it will bounce back and forth. Position Mario so that he continuously stomps the shell as it returns. With precise timing, you can rack up hundreds of 1-Ups. The key is to be slightly above the shell's path so you land on it repeatedly without getting hit.
- World 3-8 Koopa Shell Trick: Similar to World 1-2, World 3-8 (the water stage with the Cheep Cheeps) has a section with a single Koopa Troopa and a wall. You can set up an infinite 1-Up trick here by kicking the shell against the wall and repeatedly stomping it. This one can be a bit trickier due to the water physics.
- World 7-1 Piranha Plant Trick: In World 7-1, there's a section with a Piranha Plant emerging from a pipe and a block above it. If you have a Super Leaf, you can hit the block to reveal a P-Switch. Hit the P-Switch, and the Piranha Plant will turn into a coin. If you then hit the block again, another Piranha Plant will appear. You can continuously hit the P-Switch and the block to generate coins, and eventually 1-Ups, from the Piranha Plant.
These tricks are excellent for building up a large reserve of lives before heading into the more challenging worlds.
