Level Exits & Secrets

Super Mario Bros. 3 is brimming with hidden paths, bonus areas, and game-changing secrets. Mastering these will not only net you extra lives and power-ups but can also drastically alter your progression through the Mushroom World. This section details how to uncover every major secret exit and bonus in each world.

World 1: Grass Land

World 1-1: Grass Land 1

Secret 1-Up & Coin Heaven: Acquire the Raccoon Suit early in the level. After the first pipe, fly straight up to discover a hidden cloud area with coins and a 1-Up Mushroom. Fly up again from this cloud area to reach an even higher pipe leading to another coin heaven.
Coin Ship (Rare Encounter): To trigger the elusive Coin Ship, you must fulfill specific conditions in World 1-1.
1. Collect a number of coins that is a multiple of 11 (e.g., 11, 22, 33...).
2. Ensure the last two digits of your score are a multiple of 10 that matches the number of coins collected (e.g., if you collected 22 coins, your score must end in 20).
3. Finish the level when the timer's last digit is an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8).
If successful, the Hammer Bro. on the World 1 map will transform into a flying Coin Ship, offering a bonus stage filled with coins. This is the first level where this secret is possible.

World 1-2: Grass Land 2

Infinite 1-Ups: With the Raccoon Suit, continuously jump on the Goombas that appear from the pipes. By bouncing on them without touching the ground, you can rack up an impressive number of 1-Up Mushrooms.

World 1-3: Grass Land 3

Sky Coins & 1-Up: At the first set of golden blocks, hit the hidden Music Note Block. If you have the Raccoon Suit, fly up from this block to reach a sky area with numerous coins and a 1-Up Mushroom.
First Magic Whistle: This is one of the most famous secrets in SMB3.
1. Locate the white platform about halfway through the level.
2. Stand on this white platform and hold Down + B (Run).
3. Run to the right, maintaining the run, until you fall behind the scenery.
4. Continue running to the right until you find a secret area with a treasure chest containing the Magic Whistle. This item allows you to warp to later worlds.

World 1-4: Grass Land 4

White Mushroom House (P-Wing): Collect every single coin in World 1-4. Successfully gathering all coins will cause a special White Mushroom House to appear on the World 1 map, granting you a valuable P-Wing. This powerful item gives you unlimited flight for an entire stage.

World 1-Fortress: Grass Land Fortress

Second Magic Whistle: This whistle is cleverly hidden within the fortress.
1. You will need the Raccoon Suit for this secret.
2. Progress through the fortress until you reach the section with the Dry Bones enemy.
3. Above the wall where the Dry Bones is located, fly straight up with your Raccoon Suit.
4. Once you're above the wall, move to the far right.
5. Press Up to enter a hidden door, leading to a room with a treasure chest containing the Magic Whistle.

World 1-5: Grass Land 5

Sky Path & 1-Up: When you encounter the first split path in the level (one high, one low), take the higher route. Hit the Music Note Block located here. If you have the Raccoon Suit, fly up from the block to access a sky area filled with coins and a 1-Up Mushroom.
