Multiplayer Features
Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers a delightful and surprisingly deep multiplayer experience, both locally and online. Whether you're teaming up with friends on the couch or connecting with players across the globe, understanding the nuances of co-op play can significantly enhance your adventure through the Flower Kingdom. The game is designed to be stress-free, allowing players of all skill levels to enjoy the journey together.
Local Co-op: Couch Play Fun
Gather your friends and family for some classic side-scrolling action! Up to four You can join in on a single Nintendo Switch console, each controlling a different character. This is perfect for casual play and introduces some unique dynamics.
Joining a Local Game:
- From the world map, simply have additional players press the L and R buttons on their respective controllers.
- Select their desired character from the roster (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Nabbit, or Yoshi).
- Once all players are ready, the game will seamlessly transition into co-op mode for the next level.
Local Co-op Strategies & Tips:
- Character Selection: While all characters play similarly in terms of basic movement, Yoshi and Nabbit offer unique advantages. Yoshi is immune to damage and can flutter jump, making him an excellent choice for less experienced players or for carrying other players to safety. Nabbit also takes no damage from enemies, making him another great pick for accessibility.
- Reviving Teammates: If a player loses a life, they will float around as a ghost. Any other active player can revive them by simply touching their ghost before the timer runs out. This is a crucial mechanic for keeping everyone in the game and reducing frustration.
- Shared Lives: All players share a common pool of lives. However, the generous revival system means that losing a life isn't as punishing as in previous Mario titles. Focus on keeping at least one player alive to ensure everyone can continue the level.
- Wonder Flowers & Effects: When a Wonder Flower is activated in local co-op, all players experience its transformative effects. This can lead to chaotic and hilarious moments as everyone adapts to the new gameplay mechanics.
- Flagpole Bonus: You who touches the top of the flagpole at the end of a level will receive a special bonus. While not critical, it's a fun little competition to aim for!
Online Multiplayer: Connecting Globally
Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers a unique and innovative approach to online multiplayer, focusing on indirect interaction and helpful collaboration rather than direct competition. You can connect with up to 12 other players online, either with friends or random players.
Online Modes:
- Friends Room: Create a private room for up to 12 of your Nintendo Switch friends. You can see each other as live shadows, assist with revives, and even race through levels together.
- Nearby Players: Connect with other players in your vicinity, similar to local co-op but with the added benefit of online features.
- Worldwide Play: Join a global pool of players. You'll see their live shadows and can interact with them in various helpful ways.
Online Interaction & Assistance:
- Live Player Shadows: In online play, you'll see the translucent shadows of other players in real-time. These shadows represent their current position and actions within the level.
- Reviving Online Players: Just like in local co-op, if an online player loses a life, they'll turn into a ghost. If you touch their ghost, you can revive them, preventing them from having to restart from a checkpoint or the beginning of the level. This is a fantastic way to help fellow adventurers!
- Standees: These are crucial for online assistance. When you place a Standee (obtained from the Poplin Shop for 10 Flower Coins), it acts as a permanent revive point for any online player who touches it. Strategically placing Standees in challenging areas or near pitfalls can be a lifesaver for others. You can carry up to 5 Standees at a time.
- Heart Points: By reviving other players or having your Standees used, you'll earn "Heart Points." These points contribute to your player rank and are a testament to your helpfulness in the online community.
- Shared Wonder Seed Collection: If an online player collects a Wonder Seed, it counts for everyone in the session. This encourages collective progress and reduces the pressure on individual players.
- No Collision: Importantly, online players cannot directly collide with each other. This prevents griefing and ensures a smooth, stress-free experience, allowing everyone to focus on the platforming challenges.
Online Multiplayer Strategies:
- Strategic Standee Placement: Don't just drop Standees anywhere. Think about common death traps, difficult jumps, or areas where players might struggle. Placing them near the end of a particularly tricky section or before a boss fight can be incredibly beneficial.
- Look for Standees: If you're struggling with a section, keep an eye out for Standees placed by other players. They can be your lifeline!
- Embrace the Ghost: If you lose a life, don't immediately give up. Float towards other active players or Standees to get revived.
- Learn from Others: Observing the shadows of more experienced You can sometimes give you clues on how to tackle difficult sections or find hidden secrets.
Whether you prefer the immediate camaraderie of local co-op or the global, helpful spirit of online play, Super Mario Bros. Wonder's multiplayer features are designed to enhance your journey through the Flower Kingdom, making it a truly wonderful experience for everyone.
