Speedrunning Tips

Welcome, aspiring speedrunners! Super Mario Bros. is a classic for a reason, and optimizing your runs can be incredibly rewarding. This section will guide you through key strategies, item management, and level-specific tricks to shave precious seconds off your best times. Remember, practice makes perfect, and consistent execution is paramount.

General Speedrunning Principles

  • Hold B: Always hold the B button to run. This is fundamental for maintaining maximum speed.
  • Minimize Jumps: Every jump, especially high ones, can slow you down. Only jump when necessary to clear obstacles or enemies.
  • Predict Enemy Movement: Learn enemy patterns (Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants) to avoid unnecessary pauses or damage.
  • Know Your Warps: Utilizing warp zones is crucial for any serious speedrun. We'll detail these below.
  • Power-Up Priority: While Fire Flowers are great for clearing enemies, sometimes a Super Mushroom is all you need to survive a hit and maintain momentum. Prioritize what keeps you moving fastest.

World 1 Strategies

World 1-1: The Opening Sprint

  • Initial Dash: Immediately hold B and right. Jump over the first Goomba.
  • First ? Block: Hit the first ? Block for a Super Mushroom. Grab it quickly and continue running.
  • Pipe Jump: Jump over the first pipe. For the second pipe, you can often run and jump over it without losing much speed.
  • Staircase Skip: At the end of the level, instead of climbing the stairs, perform a running jump from the second-to-last step to land directly on the flagpole. This is a crucial time-saver.

World 1-2: Underground Rush & Warp Zone

  • Descent: Drop down the first pipe. Immediately hold right.
  • Mushroom Block: Hit the first block you see for a Super Mushroom if you're small Mario. If you're already Super Mario, avoid it to prevent a slight delay.
  • Warp Zone Access: This is the most critical part of 1-2.
    1. Proceed right until you see the moving platforms.
    2. Jump onto the first moving platform.
    3. As it moves upwards, jump onto the ceiling blocks.
    4. Run across the top of the screen, staying on the blocks.
    5. You'll eventually reach a hidden area with three pipes.
    6. Enter the middle pipe to warp to World 4. This is the fastest route for a full game completion.

World 4 Strategies (Warped from 1-2)

World 4-1: Maintaining Momentum

  • Lakitu Avoidance: Lakitu will appear early. Try to run under his cloud or jump over his Spinies without breaking stride.
  • Piranha Plant Timing: Learn the timing of Piranha Plants in pipes. Run past them when they are retracted.
  • Fire Flower Opportunity: There's a hidden Fire Flower in a block above the third pipe. If you're small Mario and need a power-up, consider grabbing it, but only if it doesn't cost too much time.

World 4-2: Another Warp Opportunity

  • Initial Run: Dash right, avoiding the first few enemies.
  • Hidden Block: After the first set of pipes, there's a hidden block containing a Super Mushroom above the second pipe. Grab it if needed.
  • Warp Zone Access: Similar to 1-2, this level offers another crucial warp.
    1. After the initial underground section, you'll reach an area with multiple blocks.
    2. Look for a stack of blocks that forms a small staircase.
    3. Jump on top of these blocks and run across the ceiling.
    4. You'll find another set of pipes.
    5. Enter the first pipe (leftmost) to warp to World 8. This is the final warp zone.

World 8 Strategies (Warped from 4-2)

World 8-1: The Gauntlet Begins

  • Bullet Bill Timing: Bullet Bills are frequent here. Learn their firing patterns to run under or jump over them efficiently.
  • Hammer Bro Dodge: Hammer Bros are dangerous. Try to run under their jumps or quickly dispatch them with a Fire Flower if you have one. Avoiding engagement is often faster.
  • Precise Jumps: This world demands more precise platforming. Practice your running jumps to clear wide gaps without hesitation.

World 8-2: Water and Fire

  • Underwater Section: Navigate the Cheep Cheeps and Bloopers. Keep moving forward, using small, controlled presses of the A button to swim efficiently.
  • Fire Bar Avoidance: In the castle section, time your movements to run past the rotating Fire Bars. Don't wait too long; anticipate their rotation.

World 8-3: Final Preparations

  • Hammer Bro Gauntlet: This level features multiple Hammer Bros. Again, prioritize dodging over fighting. If you have a Fire Flower, use it strategically.
  • Koopa Troopa Shells: Use kicked Koopa Troopa shells to clear out groups of enemies if it saves time, but be careful not to get hit by your own shell.

World 8-4: Bowser's Castle

  • Maze Navigation: This castle is a maze. The correct path is:
    1. Go through the first pipe you encounter.
    2. In the next room, go through the second pipe from the left.
    3. In the underwater section, swim to the right and enter the first pipe you see.
    4. You will then reach the final Bowser encounter.
  • Bowser Strategy:
    • Fire Mario: If you are Fire Mario, hit Bowser with 5 fireballs to defeat him.
    • Small/Super Mario: If you are not Fire Mario, you must run past Bowser and hit the axe at the end of the bridge. This drops Bowser into the lava. Time your run carefully to avoid his fire breath and hammers.

Mastering these techniques and practicing your execution will significantly improve your Super Mario Bros. speedrunning times. Good luck, and happy running!
