- Lightweights (Toad, Koopa Troopa): Ideal for Ghost Valley tracks (due to tight turns and no guardrails), Bowser Castle tracks (for navigating Thwomps and sharp corners), and Choco Island tracks (for avoiding mud and precise steering).
- Mediumweights (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi): Excellent all-rounders, performing well on Mario Circuits, Donut Plains, and Koopa Beach tracks. They offer a good balance for most situations.
- Heavyweights (Donkey Kong Jr., Bowser): Best for Mario Circuits (especially those with long straightaways), and can be effective on Vanilla Lake tracks if you can manage their wide turns on ice. Their ability to push opponents is also valuable in crowded sections.
Don't be afraid to experiment! Sometimes a counter-intuitive pairing can work if you adapt your driving style. For example, a skilled heavyweight driver can still dominate a technical track by mastering early power slides and using their weight to clear paths.
