Beyond simply using items, strategic deployment can win you races:

- Banana Traps: Don't just drop bananas randomly. Place them on tight turns, narrow bridges, or directly after item boxes where opponents are likely to drive. Dropping multiple bananas in a line can create a formidable barrier.
- Green Shell Ricochets: Practice bouncing Green Shells off walls to hit opponents around corners or in front of you. This requires good aim and knowledge of the track layout.
- Holding Items: Sometimes it's better to hold onto a powerful item (like a Star or Lightning Bolt) until the final lap or a crucial moment. Don't waste a Star if you're already far ahead and there are no immediate threats.
- Defensive Item Usage: If you're in the lead and have a banana or green shell, hold it behind you (item dragging) to block incoming Red Shells. This is a critical defensive maneuver.
- Lightning Bolt Timing: The Lightning Bolt is most effective when opponents are about to hit a jump, navigate a narrow section, or are clustered together. Shrinking them at these moments can cause chaos and allow you to pull ahead.
Anticipating opponent movements and understanding item probabilities based on your position are key to mastering strategic item play. Always be thinking a step ahead.
