Story & Lore
Welcome, intrepid adventurer, to the Mushroom Kingdom! Or, more accurately, to Mario Land, where a nefarious plot has unfolded in your absence. This section will guide you through the overarching narrative of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, detailing the motivations behind your quest and providing crucial lore to enhance your journey.
The Usurper's Scheme: Wario's Betrayal
Upon returning from your previous adventure in Sarasaland (as chronicled in Super Mario Land), you, Mario, discover a shocking truth: your very own castle has been seized! The culprit? None other than Wario, your greedy and jealous rival. Wario, envious of your fame and fortune, has taken over Mario Land and brainwashed its inhabitants, turning them against you. His ultimate goal is to claim your castle and all its treasures for himself.
To secure his dominion over your castle, Wario has hidden six mystical Golden Coins across Mario Land. These coins act as a magical seal, locking the entrance to your castle. Your primary objective is to retrieve all six of these Golden Coins, break Wario's enchantment, and reclaim what is rightfully yours.
The Six Golden Coins: Your Quest Begins
Each of the six Golden Coins is guarded by one of Wario's most formidable henchmen, residing in distinct themed zones across Mario Land. While you can tackle most of these zones in any order you choose, offering a degree of non-linearity to your adventure, the Space Zone is typically accessed via a secret exit in Tree Zone 3. This means that for 100% completion or to experience all zones, a certain progression is implied. For optimal progression, power-up acquisition, and to ensure you encounter all the game's secrets, we recommend the following sequence:
- Tree Zone: This verdant, arboreal world is home to the first Golden Coin. Navigate its towering trees and subterranean roots. This zone is an excellent starting point, offering relatively straightforward platforming and a good introduction to the game's mechanics.
- Boss: Ricky the Bird. This large bird will swoop down, attempting to peck Mario.
- Strategy: Ricky can be defeated by jumping on its head three times. Time your jumps to hit it as it descends, and be prepared to move quickly to avoid its attacks.
- Key Item/Power-up Focus: This zone often provides opportunities to acquire the Carrot power-up, granting Mario Bunny Ears for enhanced jumping and slow descent, which is useful for navigating the verticality of the zone.
- Secret: Tree Zone 3 contains a secret exit that leads to the Space Zone. To find it, look for a hidden pipe or block that can be broken to reveal an alternative path.
- Boss: Ricky the Bird. This large bird will swoop down, attempting to peck Mario.
- Macro Zone: A giant world where everyday objects become colossal obstacles. Shrink down to size and explore this oversized environment, from a giant ant farm to a massive kitchen.
- Boss: The Spider. This enormous arachnid guards the Golden Coin.
- Strategy: The Spider attacks by dropping smaller spiders and occasionally lunging. Jump on its head three times to defeat it. Utilize the larger platforms to gain height and avoid its ground-based attacks.
- Key Item/Power-up Focus: The Macro Zone often features the Fire Flower, allowing Mario to shoot fireballs, which can be particularly effective against the smaller spider enemies.
- Boss: The Spider. This enormous arachnid guards the Golden Coin.
- Pumpkin Zone: A spooky, Halloween-themed world filled with ghosts, ghouls, and haunted houses. Prepare for eerie encounters and tricky platforming in the dark.
- Boss: The Ghost. This spectral entity is the guardian of the Pumpkin Zone's Golden Coin.
- Strategy: The Ghost appears and disappears, making it difficult to hit. Time your jumps carefully to land on its head when it materializes. It will often move in predictable patterns, so observe before attacking. Three successful hits will defeat it.
- Key Item/Power-up Focus: The Super Star is a valuable power-up in this zone, granting temporary invincibility and allowing Mario to pass through many of the ghostly enemies unharmed.
- Boss: The Ghost. This spectral entity is the guardian of the Pumpkin Zone's Golden Coin.
- Mario Zone: A unique zone designed in your own image, featuring giant Mario statues, pipes, and even enemies that resemble you. This zone is a playful, yet challenging, tribute to Mario himself.
- Boss: The Robot Mario. This mechanical doppelganger mimics Mario's movements and attacks.
- Strategy: The Robot Mario will jump and move similar to Mario. Jump on its head three times to defeat it. Be aware of its electrified state; it will glow when electrified, making it invulnerable to direct attacks. Wait for it to return to its normal state before striking.
- Key Item/Power-up Focus: The Mario Zone often provides access to the Super Mushroom, increasing Mario's size and health, which is beneficial for surviving the boss encounter.
- Boss: The Robot Mario. This mechanical doppelganger mimics Mario's movements and attacks.
- Space Zone: Blast off into outer space and navigate through meteors, alien creatures, and low-gravity environments. This zone offers a unique change of pace with its distinct physics.
- Boss: The Space Zone Boss (also known as the "UFO" or "Alien"). This alien spacecraft is the guardian of the Space Zone's Golden Coin.
- Strategy: The Space Zone Boss flies around, dropping bombs and occasionally swooping low. You need to jump on its top hatch three times. The low gravity can make precise jumps tricky, so practice your aerial control. Avoid the bombs and its direct body.
- Key Item/Power-up Focus: The Carrot power-up is exceptionally useful here, allowing Mario to float and control his descent more effectively in the low-gravity environment, making platforming and boss evasion much easier.
- Boss: The Space Zone Boss (also known as the "UFO" or "Alien"). This alien spacecraft is the guardian of the Space Zone's Golden Coin.
- Turtle Zone: An aquatic wonderland, requiring expert swimming skills and careful navigation of underwater currents, coral reefs, and various sea creatures.
- Boss: King Totomesu. This large, ancient turtle is the final guardian of the Golden Coins.
- Strategy: King Totomesu patrols a watery arena. You'll need to hit him from above while avoiding his shell attacks and the smaller enemies he might summon. Three successful jumps on his head will defeat him. The underwater physics require precise movement.
- Key Item/Power-up Focus: The Fire Flower can be surprisingly effective underwater, as fireballs travel through water. However, the Bunny Ears (Carrot) can also provide a slight advantage in controlling Mario's movement in the water.
- Boss: King Totomesu. This large, ancient turtle is the final guardian of the Golden Coins.
Reclaiming Your Castle: The Final Showdown
Once all six Golden Coins are collected, the magical seal on your castle will break, granting you access. Prepare for the ultimate confrontation with Wario himself inside your own stronghold. This final battle will test all the skills you've honed throughout your adventure.
Final Boss: Wario
Wario is a formidable opponent, utilizing various power-ups against you. Understanding his phases and having your own power-ups ready will be crucial for victory.
- Phase 1: Standard Wario
- Appearance: Wario in his default overalls.
- Attacks: Wario will jump and charge at you, attempting to body slam Mario.
- Strategy: Jump on his head to damage him. He will recoil briefly after each hit. Three successful jumps will transition him to the next phase.
- Recommended Loadout: Any power-up helps, but a Super Mushroom for extra health is always good.
- Phase 2: Bunny Wario
- Appearance: Wario dons Bunny Ears, similar to Mario's Carrot power-up.
- Attacks: Wario gains the ability to fly and perform controlled descents, making him harder to hit. He will still try to body slam you from the air.
- Strategy: Use your own power-ups (especially the Bunny Ear power-up if you have it) to match his aerial advantage. This allows you to jump higher and float, making it easier to land on his head. Three more hits are required.
- Common Pitfall: Trying to hit him from the ground can be frustrating. Get airborne!
- Phase 3: Fire Wario
- Appearance: Wario transforms, gaining the ability to shoot fireballs, similar to the Fire Flower.
- Attacks: Wario will aggressively pursue Mario, jumping and breathing fireballs in rapid succession.
- Strategy: Dodge his fireballs and continue to jump on his head. This phase requires quick reflexes and precise timing. If you have the Fire Flower, you can try to counter-attack, but direct head stomps are still the most reliable method. Three final hits will defeat him.
- Reward: Upon his defeat, Wario will shrink down, and Mario will reclaim his castle!
Defeating Wario will restore peace to Mario Land and return your castle to its rightful owner. Congratulations, Mario, you've saved the day!
