Glitches & Exploits
While Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a relatively polished title, a few interesting glitches and exploits have been discovered over the years that can either aid your playthrough or simply provide some amusement. Mastering these can give you an edge, especially in speedrunning or simply gathering extra lives. This section details the most well-known and repeatable glitches specific to SML2.
Extended Invincibility Glitch (Tree Zone 1)
This exploit allows Mario to become temporarily invincible for an extended period, making certain sections much easier to navigate. Unlike similar glitches in other Mario titles, this one is specific to a particular enemy interaction in Super Mario Land 2.
- Location: This glitch is most reliably performed in Tree Zone 1. This is the first stage of the Tree Zone, characterized by its vibrant green palette and numerous Koopa Troopas.
- Prerequisites: You'll need to be Big Mario (having collected a Super Mushroom) and ideally have a Fire Flower or Carrot power-up in reserve. While not strictly necessary for the glitch itself, having a reserve power-up makes the timing significantly easier to manage.
- Walkthrough Steps:
- Progress through Tree Zone 1 until you find the first Invincibility Star. This star is located relatively early in the stage, shortly after the initial set of platforms and a few Koopa Troopas. It's usually found in a block or floating freely.
- Grab the Invincibility Star. Mario will begin flashing, and the iconic invincibility music will start playing.
- Immediately after grabbing the star, locate a Koopa Troopa. There are several in the vicinity. You need to take damage from this enemy. Since you are invincible, you won't lose a life, but you will shrink back down to Small Mario.
- As soon as you shrink, quickly use your reserve power-up (press 'A' or 'B' to deploy it from your inventory) to become Big Mario again. If you don't have a reserve, you must quickly find a Super Mushroom within the level before the invincibility wears off.
- If performed correctly, Mario will remain invincible even after the invincibility music stops and his flashing animation ceases. This extended invincibility is visually indicated by Mario continuing to flash, albeit often at a slower rate, and enemies still being defeated on contact. You can now traverse the level without fear of taking damage from most enemies for a significant duration.
- Strategy & Notes:
- The timing for taking damage and then powering up again is crucial. Practice makes perfect! The window for using the reserve item is quite tight after shrinking.
- This extended invincibility will last until you either exit the stage, enter a pipe leading to a bonus area, or take damage again after the initial shrinking (which would then result in losing a life if you are Small Mario).
- This is particularly useful for bypassing tricky enemy formations, navigating through sections with numerous hazards like spikes or pits (as you can often walk over them without harm), or simply speeding through a level without concern for enemy contact.
- This glitch does not make you immune to falling into bottomless pits or being crushed by environmental hazards.
Infinite 1-Up Exploit (Tree Zone 1)
Running low on lives? This simple trick in the Tree Zone can net you as many 1-Ups as you have patience for. This is a classic Mario exploit adapted for Super Mario Land 2.
- Location: This exploit is found in Tree Zone 1, the very first stage of the Tree Zone. It specifically utilizes a Koopa Troopa and a pipe.
- Prerequisites: You'll need to be Big Mario (having collected a Super Mushroom) or better (Fire Mario, Bunny Mario). Being Big Mario is essential to withstand a potential hit if you misstime the exploit.
- Walkthrough Steps:
- Advance through Tree Zone 1 until you reach the first vertical green pipe that leads upwards. This pipe is located after the initial open area and before the first set of platforms that ascend.
- Just before this pipe, there is a Koopa Troopa walking back and forth on a small platform.
- Carefully jump on the Koopa Troopa to stun it, flipping it onto its back. Do NOT kick the shell.
- Now, carefully nudge the flipped Koopa Troopa shell so that it slides and gets stuck against the base of the vertical green pipe. The shell should be positioned such that Mario can repeatedly jump on it without it moving away.
- Once the shell is in position, stand on top of the shell and repeatedly jump. Each time you land on the shell, it will bounce slightly.
- After hitting the shell approximately 8 times consecutively without it moving or being kicked away, Mario will start earning 1-Up Mushrooms for every subsequent bounce on the shell.
- Continue jumping on the shell. Each bounce will award you a 1-Up. You can accumulate lives rapidly this way.
- Strategy & Notes:
- Ensure you are Big Mario or powered up. If you accidentally kick the shell or it gets dislodged, you might need to reset the Koopa Troopa (by moving off-screen and back, or waiting for it to respawn if it falls into a pit) and reposition it.
- The key is to get the shell perfectly wedged against the pipe so it doesn't slide away when you jump on it. Experiment with the exact positioning.
- Once the 1-Up chain starts, you can simply hold down the jump button (or rapidly tap it) to continuously gain lives until you reach the maximum of 99.
- Be mindful of the timer; while the process is quick, you don't want to run out of time. This exploit is usually performed early in the level, giving you ample time.
- This is an excellent way to stock up on lives before tackling more challenging zones or bosses.
The "Walk Through Walls" Glitch (Various & Inconsistent)
This is a more advanced and significantly less consistent glitch compared to the others. It can occasionally allow Mario to pass through certain solid objects, but its utility is limited due to its unreliability.
- Location: This glitch is not tied to a specific stage but can sometimes be triggered in areas with tight corners, specific collision detection quirks, or where Mario's sprite can partially overlap with environmental geometry. It's more commonly observed in stages with many blocks, pipes, or narrow passages, such as sections of Tree Zone, Macro Zone, or Pumpkin Zone.
- Prerequisites: Often requires precise movement, pixel-perfect positioning, and sometimes a specific power-up like Bunny Mario for its slower fall speed and controlled jumps, or Fire Mario for the slight hitbox alteration during fire-spitting. Being Small Mario can sometimes make it easier to clip into smaller gaps.
- Walkthrough Steps (Highly Situational):
- Locate a Potential Clipping Point: Look for tight spaces, corners where two solid objects meet at an acute angle, or the very edges of platforms or blocks where Mario's sprite might partially overlap. Examples include the junction of a pipe and a wall, or a block positioned very close to the screen's edge.
- Attempt to Force Overlap: The goal is to have Mario's collision box partially intersect with a solid object's collision box. This can sometimes be achieved by:
- Precise Jumping: Jumping into a corner or against an object at a very specific angle and speed.
- Landing on Edges: Landing on the extreme edge of a platform or block while simultaneously pressing into an adjacent solid object.
- Rapid Directional Changes: Quickly changing direction while pressing against a wall, sometimes causing a momentary "wiggle" that can lead to a clip.
- Bunny Mario's Descent: Using Bunny Mario's controlled descent to slowly lower Mario into a tight gap or against an object, hoping to find a clipping pixel.
- Exploiting the Clip: If successful, Mario might briefly appear to be "inside" the wall or object. With continued precise movement (often holding the direction into the object and sometimes jumping), you might be able to move further into or even through the object. This can sometimes lead to being able to walk on top of the screen or in "out of bounds" areas.
- Strategy & Notes:
- This glitch is extremely inconsistent and often leads to Mario getting stuck, bouncing off the object, or simply taking damage if it's an enemy. It is not a reliable method for progression in a typical playthrough.
- It's more of a curiosity for dedicated glitch hunters and speedrunners looking for very specific, frame-perfect setups. There are no widely known, easily repeatable "walk through walls" glitches that offer significant advantages for casual play in SML2.
- Be cautious, as getting stuck can sometimes necessitate a reset of the game, leading to the loss of any unsaved progress. Always save your game (if playing on an emulator with save states) or be prepared to lose progress if attempting this.
- The game's collision detection is generally robust, making these types of glitches rare and difficult to execute intentionally.
