Small Mario is Mario's default and most vulnerable state. He starts every new life as Small Mario. In this form, Mario is small in stature and has no special abilities. If Small Mario takes any damage (from an enemy, projectile, or environmental hazard like falling into a pit), he immediately loses a life. This makes playing as Small Mario very challenging, as every mistake is costly.

Characteristics:

  • Size: Small, allowing him to fit into tight spaces (though this is rarely a gameplay mechanic in SML).
  • Abilities: Can jump and run. Cannot shoot fireballs/Superballs.
  • Defense: None. One hit means a lost life.

Strategy when Small Mario:

  • Prioritize power-ups: Your absolute top priority should be to find a Super Mushroom to become Super Mario.
  • Play defensively: Avoid unnecessary risks. Focus on dodging enemies and hazards rather than engaging them.
  • Utilize pipes: If you see a pipe, it might lead to a bonus room with coins, which can help you get a 1-Up.
  • Memorize level layouts: Knowing where enemies and hazards are is even more critical when you have no defensive buffer.

While being Small Mario is dangerous, it's an inevitable part of the game. The goal is to minimize the time spent in this state and quickly power up to Super Mario for added protection and abilities. Always be on the lookout for that first Super Mushroom!
