Scoring System

While rescuing Princess Daisy and restoring peace to Sarasaland is your primary goal, accumulating a high score in Super Mario Land adds an exciting layer of challenge and replayability. Understanding the scoring mechanics is crucial for any aspiring high-score champion. Every action Mario takes, from collecting coins to defeating enemies, contributes to your overall score. This detailed guide will break down all the ways to earn points and provide strategies to maximize your score in each kingdom.

Earning Points

Points are awarded for various actions throughout your adventure. Mastering these will significantly boost your score.

  • Coins: Each individual coin collected grants you 10 points. While seemingly small, these add up quickly, especially in Coin Rooms.
  • Enemies: Defeating enemies is a primary source of points. The point value varies depending on the enemy type and how you defeat them.
  • Blocks: Breaking certain blocks, particularly those containing power-ups or coins, will also net you points.
  • Power-Ups: Collecting power-ups like the Super Mushroom or Super Ball Flower provides a direct score bonus.
  • End-of-Level Bonus: The time remaining on the clock at the end of each stage is converted into bonus points. The faster you complete a level, the more bonus points you receive.

Enemy Point Values & Strategies

Different enemies offer different point rewards. Prioritize taking down higher-value targets when possible.

Standard Enemies

  • Goomba (Chibibo): 100 points. These common foes are easily defeated by jumping on them.
  • Koopa Troopa (Nokobon): 100 points. Jump on them to flip them, then kick their shell for another 100 points if it hits another enemy.
  • Bullet Bill (Gao): 100 points. Jump on them or shoot them with the Super Ball.
  • Piranha Plant (Pakkun Flower): 100 points. Best defeated with a Super Ball.
  • Fly (Bunbun): 100 points. Jump on them or use a Super Ball.
  • Fish (Cheep Cheep): 100 points. Found in water levels, these are best dealt with using Super Balls or by avoiding them.

Higher Value Enemies & Bosses

  • Tatanga's Minions (Bosses): Defeating the mini-boss at the end of each stage provides a significant point bonus, typically 1000 points. For example, defeating King Totomesu in Birabuto Kingdom or Dragonzamasu in Muda Kingdom will grant this bonus.
  • Tatanga: The final boss offers the highest single enemy point reward.

Strategy Tip: In levels with multiple enemies, try to chain stomps or use a kicked Koopa shell to take out several enemies at once. This not only clears the path but also provides a satisfying point multiplier.

Coin Rooms & Bonus Stages

These special areas are crucial for maximizing your coin and, therefore, your point count.

  • Coin Rooms: These hidden rooms, accessed by finding specific blocks, are packed with coins. Each coin is worth 10 points. For example, in Birabuto Kingdom, look for a hidden block near the end of Stage 1-1 to access the first Coin Room. Collect every coin you can!
  • Bonus Stages: At the end of each world, you'll encounter a bonus stage where you can earn extra lives or coins. Aim for the coin prizes to boost your score. The "Catch the Heart" game in the bonus stage can be tricky, but practice makes perfect for securing those valuable coins.

Time Bonus

Every second remaining on the timer at the end of a stage is converted into points. This means speed is of the essence for high scores.

  • Prioritize Movement: Learn optimal routes through levels to minimize backtracking and unnecessary detours.
  • Master Jumps: Efficient jumping and platforming will shave off precious seconds.
  • Power-Up Usage: Use the Super Ball Flower strategically to clear enemies quickly and maintain momentum.

By combining efficient enemy dispatch, thorough coin collection, and swift level completion, you'll be well on your way to achieving a princely score in Super Mario Land!
