Game Over & Continues
Even the most seasoned Mario players will occasionally face a "Game Over" screen. Understanding how lives work and how to utilize continues effectively can significantly improve your chances of completing Super Mario Land. Don't let a few missteps discourage you; with these strategies, you'll be back in action in no time!
Understanding Lives
Mario starts each game with a set number of lives. Losing a life occurs when:
- Mario takes damage while in his small form.
- Mario falls into a pit or off the screen.
- The timer runs out.
- Mario is hit by an enemy while piloting the Marine Pop or Sky Pop.
When you run out of lives, the game ends, and you'll be presented with the "Game Over" screen.
Earning Extra Lives (1-Up Mushrooms)
Collecting 1-Up Mushrooms is crucial for extending your playtime. These green-capped fungi are often hidden or require specific actions to reveal:
- Hidden Blocks: Many stages contain invisible blocks that, when hit, reveal a 1-Up Mushroom. Experiment by jumping and hitting blocks in suspicious areas, especially above pipes or gaps.
- Coin Rooms: While primarily for coins, some Coin Rooms may contain a 1-Up Mushroom as a bonus for skilled navigation.
- Bonus Stages: Successfully completing the bonus game at the end of each stage (by hitting the top exit block) can sometimes award you extra lives, among other prizes.
- 100 Coins: Collecting 100 coins will always grant you an extra life. Prioritize gathering coins whenever safely possible.
The Continue System
Upon reaching the "Game Over" screen, you have the option to continue your adventure. This is a vital feature for progressing through the game without having to restart from the very beginning.
How to Continue:
- When the "Game Over" screen appears, press the Start button.
- You will be given the option to "Continue." Select this option.
What Happens When You Continue:
- Lives Reset: You will restart with three lives, regardless of how many you had when you got the Game Over.
- World Progress Maintained: You will begin at the start of the current world you were playing in. For example, if you got a Game Over in World 2-3, you would restart at World 2-1. This is a significant advantage over restarting the entire game.
- Score Reset: Your score will be reset to zero.
- Power-ups Lost: Any power-ups you had (Superball Flower) will be lost, and you will start as small Mario.
Strategic Use of Continues
While continuing is helpful, it's not without its drawbacks. Here's how to make the most of it:
- Prioritize 1-Ups: If you're struggling in a particular world, focus on collecting as many 1-Up Mushrooms as possible in earlier stages of that world. This gives you more attempts before needing to continue.
- Practice Difficult Stages: If you consistently lose lives on a specific stage, use continues as a way to practice that stage repeatedly without having to replay entire worlds.
- Know When to Reset: If you find yourself in a deep hole with very few lives early in a world, sometimes it's more efficient to intentionally get a Game Over to reset your lives to three at the start of the world, rather than trying to limp through with one life.
By understanding the mechanics of lives and continues, you can navigate the challenges of Super Mario Land more effectively and ultimately rescue Princess Daisy!
