Mario's journey through Sarasaland is made easier with the help of various power-ups and items. Knowing what each one does and when to use them is crucial for success. These items are typically found by hitting '?' blocks or hidden blocks.

• Super Mushroom: This classic power-up transforms Small Mario into Super Mario. As Super Mario, you can take one hit of damage without losing a life, reverting back to Small Mario instead. It's your primary defense against enemies and hazards.
• Superball Flower: This unique power-up, exclusive to Super Mario Land, transforms Super Mario into Superball Mario. Pressing the B button will allow you to shoot a Superball. Unlike fireballs, Superballs bounce off surfaces at a 45-degree angle, allowing you to hit enemies in hard-to-reach places. They can also collect coins through blocks. If Small Mario collects a Superball Flower, he first becomes Super Mario, then Superball Mario.
• Starman (Invincibility Star): Collecting a Starman makes Mario temporarily invincible. During this period, he can run through most enemies without taking damage, instantly defeating them. The invincibility lasts for a short duration, indicated by flashing sprites and a unique jingle. Use it to clear crowded areas or bypass difficult sections.
• Heart: These rare items grant Mario an extra life immediately upon collection. They are often found in hidden blocks or as rewards for completing bonus stages. Always prioritize collecting hearts when you see them.
• Coin: While not a power-up, coins are vital. Collecting 100 coins grants Mario an extra life. They are abundant throughout levels and are a consistent way to build up your life count.

Strategic use of power-ups can turn the tide of a difficult level. For instance, saving a Superball Flower for a section with many flying enemies can be very effective. Always try to maintain a power-up state, as it provides a crucial buffer against losing a life.
