Stage 1-2: The Perilous Platforms of Birabuto Kingdom
Welcome to Stage 1-2, a significant step up from the introductory 1-1, presenting players with increased verticality, more complex platforming challenges, and the introduction of new enemy types. This stage is crucial for honing your jumping precision and timing. Master it, and the rest of Birabuto Kingdom will feel much more manageable!
Walkthrough: Navigating the Shifting Sands
- The Initial Ascent & Goombo Gauntlet:
- Begin by moving right. You'll immediately encounter two Goombos. These are easily dispatched with a jump on the head or a well-aimed Superball.
- Just past the second Goombo, you'll see a single '?' block. Hit this to reveal a Super Mushroom. If you're already Super Mario, it will yield a Fire Flower, granting you the invaluable Superball ability.
- Continue right. You'll encounter a stack of three regular blocks. The top-most block in this stack, specifically the one directly above the '?' block you just hit, contains a hidden 1-Up Heart. Jump from the block below it to reveal this life-saving item.
- Proceed cautiously. You'll encounter another two Goombos before reaching the first set of moving platforms.
- The Moving Platform Maze:
- This section introduces the stage's primary challenge: a series of horizontally moving platforms over bottomless pits.
- Platform 1: A single, slow-moving platform. Wait for it to approach, jump on, and then jump to the solid ground on the right.
- Platform 2 & 3: A pair of platforms moving in opposite directions. The key here is timing. Jump onto the first platform when it's moving towards you, then quickly jump to the second when it's within range, and finally to the safe ground. Don't rush, but don't hesitate either.
- Hidden Coin Block: After the second set of moving platforms, look above the regular blocks. There's a hidden block containing multiple coins directly above the second regular block from the left.
- You'll encounter another Goombo before the next major section.
- The Fly Patrol & Starman Surprise:
- This area introduces Fly enemies (also known as Pihana in some guides), which are small, winged creatures that fly in a predictable up-and-down pattern.
- You'll encounter three Flies in quick succession, patrolling narrow platforms over pits.
- Strategy:
- If you have Superballs, these are your best friend here. One shot dispatches a Fly.
- If you're Small Mario or Super Mario without Superballs, you'll need precise jump timing. Wait for the Fly to descend, then jump on its head.
- Starman Location: After defeating the third Fly, you'll land on a solid platform with a single regular block. Jump directly above this block to reveal a hidden block containing a Starman.
- Maximizing Starman: Once you collect the Starman, Mario becomes temporarily invincible and gains increased speed. Rush forward! You can run through enemies without taking damage. This is an excellent opportunity to clear out the remaining enemies and gain easy points.
- The Final Gauntlet & Flagpole Finish:
- The Starman's invincibility will carry you through a few more Goombos and potentially another Fly or two, depending on your speed.
- You'll encounter a final series of regular blocks. There are no more hidden items of significance here, but use them as stepping stones if needed.
- The stage culminates with the iconic flagpole. Aim for the very top of the flagpole to earn the maximum 8000 bonus points. This requires a well-timed jump from the platform just before it.
Enemy Encounters
This stage features a limited but impactful roster of enemies:
- Goombo: The classic mushroom-like enemy. Easily defeated by jumping on its head or with a Superball. They appear frequently throughout the stage.
- Fly (Pihana): A winged enemy that flies in a vertical pattern. More challenging to stomp than Goombos due to their movement. Best dealt with Superballs or precise jump timing.

Strategy Tips & Common Pitfalls
- Timing is Everything: The moving platforms are the primary challenge. Observe their patterns before jumping. A moment of patience can save you a life.
- Hidden Blocks: Always be on the lookout for hidden blocks, especially above regular block formations. Stage 1-2 has a crucial 1-Up Heart and Starman hidden this way.
- Superball Advantage: If you get the Fire Flower, conserve your Superballs for the Fly enemies. They make those encounters significantly easier.
- Starman Rush: When you get the Starman, don't hesitate. Sprint forward to maximize its duration and clear as many enemies as possible for points.
- Flagpole Jump: For maximum points, aim for the very top of the flagpole. This requires a full jump from the platform directly preceding it.
- Don't Fear Restarts: If you're struggling with a particular jump or enemy sequence, don't be afraid to restart the stage. Practice makes perfect, especially in Super Mario Land's precise platforming.
Mastering Stage 1-2 sets a strong foundation for the rest of your adventure in Birabuto Kingdom. Pay attention to the details, practice your jumps, and you'll be well on your way to rescuing Princess Daisy!
