Stage 3-1: Ancient Moai Mysteries
Welcome to Stage 3-1, the first level of the Easton Kingdom, a land inspired by ancient civilizations and characterized by its iconic Moai statues. This stage introduces new enemy types and environmental hazards, demanding precise platforming and strategic engagement. Prepare for a blend of ground-based movement, vertical ascents, and careful navigation around projectile-firing statues.
Walkthrough: Navigating the Moai Gauntlet
- Initial Ascent and Goombos:
- The stage begins immediately to the right. Move forward, dispatching the first few Goombos (the standard mushroom-like enemies) you encounter. These are easily defeated with a single jump on their head or a Superball.
- Jump across the initial small gaps. You'll quickly come across a series of solid blocks.
- First Super Mushroom & Crumbling Blocks:
- After the initial Goombos and a short platforming section, you'll see a single block suspended in the air. Hit this block to reveal a Super Mushroom. Collecting this will transform Mario into Super Mario, allowing him to take an extra hit and break certain blocks.
- Immediately following the Super Mushroom, you'll encounter your first set of Crumbling Blocks. These light-colored blocks disappear shortly after Mario steps on them. You must move quickly across them to avoid falling into the pit below. There are typically 2-3 such blocks in a row here.
- Introducing the Moai Heads (Gabon):
- Shortly after the crumbling blocks, you'll meet the primary new enemy of this stage: the Moai Head (officially named Gabon). These stationary statues periodically open their mouths and shoot a slow-moving projectile horizontally.
- The first Gabon is positioned on a solid platform. You can defeat it by jumping on its head when its mouth is closed, or by hitting it with a Superball. Time your approach carefully to avoid its projectile.
- Platforming with Gabons and Hidden Blocks:
- Continue right, navigating a series of platforms. You'll encounter more Goombos and additional Gabons.
- Hidden Block Alert: Above a stack of two regular blocks, approximately halfway through this section, jump to reveal a hidden block containing several coins. Another hidden block containing a single coin can be found slightly further to the right, above a single regular block.
- Look for a series of small, elevated platforms. Some of these platforms are actually Gabons themselves, serving as both obstacles and temporary footholds. Be extremely cautious when jumping on these, as they can still fire projectiles.
- Vertical Ascent and Superball Flower:
- The stage transitions into a vertical section. You'll need to ascend by jumping on a series of small, floating platforms.
- Power-Up Location: During this vertical climb, keep an eye out for a row of three regular blocks. The middle block contains a Superball Flower. This crucial power-up transforms Mario into Superball Mario, allowing him to shoot bouncing projectiles that can collect coins and defeat enemies from a distance. This is highly recommended for the upcoming sections.
- Continue your ascent, timing your jumps to avoid any stray Gabon projectiles from below or to the sides.
- Final Stretch and Flagpole:
- Once you reach the top of the vertical section, the path will flatten out again. You'll encounter a final few Goombos and potentially one more Gabon.
- Navigate the last few platforms. The stage concludes with the iconic flagpole. Jump onto the flagpole as high as possible to earn more points.
Enemy Dossier
- Goombo: The most basic enemy. Easily defeated by jumping on its head or with a Superball. Poses little threat unless you rush carelessly.
- Gabon (Moai Head): Stationary enemies that periodically shoot a slow-moving projectile.
- Strategy: Can be defeated by jumping on their head when their mouth is closed, or by hitting them with a Superball. If you don't have a Superball, time your jumps to pass them immediately after they fire, or wait for their mouth to close before stomping.
- Variant: Some Gabons serve as platforms. Exercise extreme caution, as they can still fire while you're standing on them.

Strategic Tips & Common Pitfalls
- Timing is Key: Many sections of Stage 3-1, particularly those involving Gabons and Crumbling Blocks, rely heavily on precise timing. Don't rush into situations without observing enemy patterns.
- Superball Advantage: Acquiring the Superball Flower during the vertical ascent makes the rest of the stage significantly easier, allowing you to clear Gabons from a safe distance. Prioritize getting it.
- Hidden Block Exploration: Always jump above suspicious-looking single blocks or small block formations. Hidden blocks often contain valuable coins or even power-ups.
- Crumbling Block Caution: When crossing crumbling blocks, commit to your jump and keep moving. Hesitation will lead to a fall.
- Gabon Platforming: If you must use a Gabon as a platform, try to jump on its head when its mouth is closed. If it fires while you're on it, quickly jump off and back on, or to the next safe platform.
Mastering Stage 3-1 sets a good foundation for the challenges of the Easton Kingdom. With careful timing and strategic use of power-ups, you'll conquer the Moai mysteries and continue your journey to rescue Princess Daisy!
