Through Bandit's Way
Welcome, intrepid adventurer, to Bandit's Way! This short but eventful path serves as your introduction to the wider world beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and a crucial stepping stone towards retrieving the first Star Piece. While relatively linear, Bandit's Way is packed with new enemy encounters, hidden treasures, and valuable experience points. Pay close attention to your surroundings, practice your Action Commands, and prepare for a unique encounter at the end of the road.
Unlike some paths in Super Mario RPG, Bandit's Way leads directly to Rose Way. There are no detours through the Kero Sewers required at this point; that's an optional, later adventure. Focus on mastering the basics here before moving on.
Bandit's Way Walkthrough
Upon entering Bandit's Way from the Mushroom Way exit, you'll immediately notice a change in scenery and enemy types. This area is designed to help you get comfortable with more varied combat scenarios.
-
Initial Path & First Encounters:
- The path begins with a straightforward stretch. Your first encounters will likely be with Crooks and Spikies.
- Crooks: These bandit-like enemies are a good opportunity to practice your timed hits. Their attacks are generally straightforward.
- Spikies: These spiny creatures can be a bit trickier. Their defense is higher, and their attacks can inflict more damage if not blocked. Remember to time your blocks for reduced damage!
- Hidden Block 1: Keep an eye out for a hidden block containing a Mushroom (restores 30 HP) early on. It's usually found by jumping around suspicious-looking empty spaces.
-
The Crossroads & Item Collection:
- You'll soon reach a small open area with a few branching paths. This is where exploration pays off.
- Left Path: Often leads to a dead end with a single enemy or a small coin cache.
- Right Path: Typically continues the main route.
- Hidden Block 2: In this area, there's another hidden block, often containing Coins or another Mushroom. Jump near walls and corners.
- Treasure Chest 1: Look for a visible treasure chest containing a Flower (restores 1 FP). These are crucial for using special attacks.
-
The Goomba Encounter & Action Commands:
- Further along, you'll encounter more Goombas, but they might be accompanied by Crooks or Spikies, forcing you to prioritize targets.
- Action Command Practice: This is an excellent area to refine your Action Commands for both attacking and defending. Mastering these will significantly reduce damage taken and increase damage dealt throughout the game.
-
The Bandit's Hideout & Mallow's Introduction:
- As you progress, the path will narrow, leading to a small, enclosed area. This is where you'll encounter a unique NPC.
- Mallow's Introduction: Here, you'll find a young, cloud-like creature named Mallow, who has had his Frog Coin stolen by a bandit. This encounter is pivotal as it leads to your first "boss" battle.
- Dialogue: Engage in the conversation with Mallow. He will join your party shortly after this event.
-
Boss Battle: Croco (First Encounter)
- After Mallow joins, the bandit Croco will appear, initiating your first major boss fight.
Enemy Encounters & Strategies
Bandit's Way introduces a few new faces to Mario's rogues' gallery. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses will make your journey smoother.
- Crook:
- HP: ~20
- Weakness: Jump
- Strategy: Straightforward physical attacks. Easy to block. Use Mario's Jump attack for extra damage.
- Spiky:
- HP: ~25
- Weakness: Fire (though you don't have it yet)
- Strategy: Higher defense than Crooks. Their attacks can be a bit faster to block. Focus on timed hits with Mario's regular attack.
- Goomba:
- HP: ~10
- Weakness: Jump
- Strategy: The weakest enemy. Use them to practice Action Commands.
Boss Strategy: Croco (First Encounter)
Croco is your first true boss, and he's designed to teach you the importance of strategy and Action Commands. Don't underestimate him!
- Croco Stats (Approximate):
- HP: ~320
- Attack: ~20
- Defense: ~10
- Magic Attack: ~15
- Magic Defense: ~5
- Weakness: Jump (Mario), Thunderbolt (Mallow)
- Recommended Loadout:
- Mario: Equipped with the best available weapon (e.g., Hammer) and armor (e.g., Work Pants).
- Mallow: Equipped with any available accessories.
- Items: Stock up on Mushrooms (2-3) and at least one Honey Syrup (restores 10 FP) if possible.
- Battle Strategy:
- Mario's Role: Mario should primarily use his Jump special attack. It deals significant damage to Croco and is his weakness. Conserve FP early on if you need to, but unleash Jump when you have the chance.
- Mallow's Role: Mallow's Thunderbolt is effective against Croco, but his FP is limited. Use it strategically. Mallow's regular attack is weaker, so he might be better served using items to heal Mario or restore FP.
- Healing: Croco hits hard. Pay close attention to your HP. Use Mushrooms when either Mario or Mallow drops below 50% HP. Mallow can use his healing spell, but items are often more efficient early on.
- Croco's Attacks:
- Physical Attack: Croco will often charge and hit one character. Practice your timed block!
- Flame Thrower: A fire-based attack that hits both characters. This is where Mallow's magic defense comes in handy, but it can still hurt.
- Grenade: Croco will sometimes throw a grenade, dealing moderate damage to one character.
- Mid-Battle Item Steal: At one point, Croco will steal all your items! Don't panic. Continue fighting. He will eventually drop a Mystery Egg (which you can't use yet) and return your items. This is a scripted event.
- Focus Fire: Concentrate all your attacks on Croco. There are no other enemies to worry about in this fight.
- Victory Rewards:
- Experience Points: A significant boost for both Mario and Mallow.
- Coins: A good amount to start building your funds.
- Frog Coin: Mallow's stolen coin is returned!
Items & Collectibles
Exploring every nook and cranny of Bandit's Way is highly recommended. Hidden blocks and visible chests offer valuable resources.

| Mushroom | Hidden Block / Chest | 2-3 | Restores 30 HP |
| Flower | Visible Chest | 1 | Restores 1 FP |
| Coins | Hidden Block / Enemy Drop | Varies | Currency for shops |
| Frog Coin | Boss Drop (Croco) | 1 | Special currency for rare items |
Common Pitfalls & Tips
- Don't Rush: Take your time to explore. Bandit's Way is short, but missing hidden blocks means missing out on valuable early-game items.
- Practice Action Commands: This cannot be stressed enough. The better you are at timed hits and blocks, the easier the entire game will be.
- Save Before Croco: There's a save block just before the Croco encounter. Use it! It's better to reload than to lose progress.
- Level Up: If you're struggling with Croco, spend a little time fighting the regular enemies on Bandit's Way to gain a level or two. Even a small stat boost can make a difference.
With Croco defeated and Mallow officially in your party, you're now ready to proceed to Rose Way, the next exciting area on your quest to recover the Star Pieces!
