Welcome back to the Mushroom Kingdom, though things are looking a little… spikier than usual! Bowser’s forces have taken over, and it’s up to Mario to set things right. This section will guide you through the initial chaos, from securing your first Star Piece to confronting the Hammer Bros.

Navigating the Invaded Kingdom

Upon returning to the Mushroom Kingdom, you’ll find it swarming with Bowser’s minions. Your immediate goal is to make your way through the town and confront the source of the invasion.

  • Initial Encounters: The streets are crawling with Goombas and Koopa Troopas. These are basic enemies, but don't underestimate them. Use timed hits for extra damage and to minimize incoming damage.
  • Toad's House: Head to the house on the left side of the town square. Inside, you'll find a scared Toad. Speak to him to receive a Mushroom, a vital healing item for your journey.
  • Item Shop: The Item Shop is still accessible, though the shopkeeper is hiding. You can purchase additional Mushrooms and Syrup here if needed. It's always wise to stock up before a boss fight.
  • Princess Peach's Castle: Your ultimate destination in this area is Peach's Castle, located at the northern end of the town. However, the path is blocked by a formidable foe.

Confronting the Hammer Bros.

As you approach the entrance to Peach's Castle, you'll be ambushed by a pair of Hammer Bros. This is your first taste of a proper boss encounter, so be prepared!

Battle Strategy:
  • Targeting: Focus your attacks on one Hammer Bro at a time to eliminate them quickly. Reducing the number of active enemies will significantly decrease incoming damage.
  • Timed Hits: Both Mario's Jump and Hammer attacks benefit greatly from timed hits. Practice your timing to maximize damage output.
  • Hammer Bro Attacks:
    • Hammer Toss: The Hammer Bros will frequently throw hammers at Mario. Timed blocks are crucial here to reduce damage.
    • Jump Attack: They may also perform a jump attack. This is another opportunity for a timed block.
  • Healing: Don't hesitate to use your Mushrooms if Mario's HP drops below 50%. Staying healthy is more important than conserving items at this stage.
  • Special Attack: Mario's Jump is effective against the Hammer Bros. Consider using it for its consistent damage.

Upon defeating the Hammer Bros., they will drop a valuable item: the Hammer. This is a new weapon for Mario, offering a different attack animation and potentially higher damage than his initial punch.

The First Star Piece

With the Hammer Bros defeated, the path to Peach's Castle is clear. Enter the castle to find it in disarray. Head towards the main hall, and you'll witness a dramatic scene involving Bowser and his new ally, the mysterious Smithy Gang.

After the cutscene, you will automatically receive the 1st Star Piece. This marks a significant milestone in your adventure and signifies the beginning of your quest to recover all seven Star Pieces.

Before leaving the castle, explore any accessible rooms for hidden items or additional dialogue from the terrified Toads. Once you're ready, exit the castle and head east towards the next area: Bandit's Way.
