Yoshi: A Fruity Friend
Yoshi makes a special appearance in Super Mario Sunshine, acting as a temporary companion who sificantly alters gameplay mechanics. Mario can only utilize Yoshi after rescuing him from Shadow Mario in specific levels. Once freed, Yoshi becomes available for use, offering a unique set of abilities that complement Mario's own. Yoshi's primary function is his ability to eat enemies and other objects with his long tongue. Upon consuming them, he can transform them into various types of fruit. These fruits are not just for show; they are integral to solving certain puzzles and overcoming obstacles. Yoshi can also spray fruit juice, a substance distinct from FLUDD's water, which possesses its own unique properties.
The type of fruit Yoshi consumes directly influences the properties of his juice. For example, eating a specific fruit might cause Yoshi to spray a juice that can dissolve certain types of goop or reveal hidden platforms and pathways that are otherwise invisible. This mechanic adds a layer of puzzle-solving depth, requiring players to find the correct fruits to progress. However, Yoshi's tenure is temporary. He has a limited lifespan and will eventually disappear, typically after a set amount of time or if he takes damage. This means players must utilize his abilities efficiently before he departs. The introduction of Yoshi provides a refreshing change of pace and introduces new strategic considerations, encouraging players to experiment with his unique fruit-based abilities to overcome challenges that might be insurmountable with Mario and FLUDD alone. His presence often unlocks secret areas or provides shortcuts, making his rescue and utilization a rewarding experience.
