Delfino Airstrip

Welcome to Delfino Airstrip, your entry point to the beautiful Isle Delfino! This initial area serves as a brief tutorial and introduces you to the core mechanics of Super Mario Sunshine. While seemingly straightforward, there are a few secrets and essential steps to complete before you can truly begin your adventure.

Initial Arrival & FLUDD Acquisition

Upon landing, you'll be greeted by a short cutscene introducing the island and the mysterious "Shadow Mario." Your first objective is to acquire FLUDD, your indispensable water-packing companion.

  • Follow the Path: After the cutscene, head straight forward from the plane. You'll notice a large, goopy Piranha Plant blocking your way.
  • Locate FLUDD: To the right of the Piranha Plant, near the edge of the airstrip, you'll find a small shed. Approach it to trigger another cutscene where you discover FLUDD.
  • FLUDD Tutorial: FLUDD will automatically attach to Mario. The game will then guide you through basic controls:
    • A Button: Jump
    • B Button (or R Trigger): Spray water (aim with C-stick if available)
    • Y Button: Switch nozzles (though only the Squirt Nozzle is available initially)

Cleaning Up the Airstrip

With FLUDD in hand, it's time to tackle the mess Shadow Mario left behind. This section is crucial for understanding how to use FLUDD effectively against goop and enemies.

  • Defeat the Piranha Plant:
    1. Approach the large Piranha Plant that was blocking your path.
    2. Spray water directly into its mouth when it opens.
    3. It will temporarily deflate. Repeat this process two more times.
    4. After three successful sprays, the Piranha Plant will be defeated, revealing a Shine Sprite.
  • Collect the First Shine Sprite: Walk over to the newly appeared Shine Sprite to collect it. This is your very first Shine and a key step in progressing the story.
  • Clear Remaining Goop: While not strictly necessary to proceed, it's good practice to clear all the remaining goop on the airstrip. This helps you get accustomed to FLUDD's spraying mechanics and can sometimes reveal hidden coins.
  • Hidden Coins & Items:
    • Coin Trail: Spray the goop near the plane's wing to reveal a trail of yellow coins.
    • 1-Up Mushroom: On the far left side of the airstrip (when facing the ocean), spray the goop near the fence to uncover a 1-Up Mushroom.
    • Red Coin Challenge (Optional): If you're feeling adventurous, look for eight red coins scattered around the airstrip. Collecting all eight will grant you an additional Shine Sprite. These are often found by spraying goop, jumping on crates, or exploring the perimeter.

Departure to Delfino Plaza

Once you've collected the initial Shine Sprite from the Piranha Plant, a new path will open, leading you to the main hub of the game.

  • Approach the Large Pipe: After collecting the first Shine, a large, green pipe will appear near where the Piranha Plant was.
  • Enter the Pipe: Jump into the pipe to be transported to Delfino Plaza, where your true adventure begins!

Make sure you're comfortable with FLUDD's controls and basic movement before heading to Delfino Plaza, as the challenges there will quickly ramp up!
