Game Progression & Unlockables
Welcome, aspiring hero of Delfino Plaza! This comprehensive guide will walk you through the essential steps to progress in Super Mario Sunshine, detailing how to unlock new areas, crucial abilities, and hidden secrets. Follow these steps to cleanse the island of its graffiti and restore the Shine Sprites!
Initial Setup & First Shine
Your adventure begins immediately upon arrival at Delfino Airstrip. You'll quickly be introduced to the game's core mechanics and the initial objective.
- Delfino Airstrip: After the opening cutscene, you'll be tasked with cleaning up the Manta-like graffiti blocking the runway. This serves as your tutorial for F.L.U.D.D.'s basic spray functions.
- First Boss Encounter: Confront the large Piranha Plant created from the graffiti. Spray water into its mouth when it opens to defeat it.
- Shine Sprite Acquisition: Upon defeating the Piranha Plant, you'll receive your very first Shine Sprite, which will transport you to Delfino Plaza.
Delfino Plaza Hub & Area Unlocks
Delfino Plaza acts as your central hub, connecting all the major levels. New areas become accessible as you collect more Shine Sprites.
Unlocking Bianco Hills
Your first major destination is Bianco Hills, located to the north of Delfino Plaza.
- Requirement: Collect 1 Shine Sprite (automatically obtained from the Airstrip).
- Action: Head towards the large graffiti-covered archway on the northern side of Delfino Plaza. A cutscene will trigger, revealing Shadow Mario. Chase him down and spray him with water until he drops the Nozzle Box.
- Unlockable: The Nozzle Box grants you the Hover Nozzle, a crucial ability for extended jumps and reaching higher platforms. After this, the portal to Bianco Hills will be active.
Unlocking Ricco Harbor
Ricco Harbor is the bustling port area, south-east of Delfino Plaza.
- Requirement: Collect 3 Shine Sprites.
- Action: Once you have 3 Shines, Shadow Mario will appear again in Delfino Plaza. Chase him down and spray him until he drops the Nozzle Box containing the Rocket Nozzle. This powerful nozzle allows Mario to launch high into the air. The portal to Ricco Harbor will then be accessible.
Unlocking Gelato Beach
Gelato Beach is a sunny, sandy paradise to the south-west.
- Requirement: Collect 5 Shine Sprites.
- Action: With 5 Shines in hand, Shadow Mario will make another appearance in Delfino Plaza, often near the lighthouse or the main fountain. Catch him to unlock the portal to Gelato Beach.
Unlocking Pinna Park
Pinna Park, the island's amusement park, is located off the coast of Delfino Plaza.
- Requirement: Collect 10 Shine Sprites.
- Action: After acquiring 10 Shines, a new cutscene will play showing Shadow Mario kidnapping Princess Peach and fleeing to Pinna Park. The cannon in Delfino Plaza will now be active, allowing you to launch to Pinna Park.
Unlocking Sirena Beach
Sirena Beach is a mysterious, hotel-filled area to the west.
- Requirement: Collect 15 Shine Sprites.
- Action: With 15 Shines, Shadow Mario will appear once more in Delfino Plaza. This time, he'll be carrying a large Manta Ray. Defeat the Manta Ray by spraying it with water until it splits into smaller pieces, then eliminate all the smaller pieces. This will clear the path and activate the portal to Sirena Beach.
Unlocking Noki Bay
Noki Bay is a tranquil, cliff-side area to the north-west.
- Requirement: Collect 20 Shine Sprites.
- Action: Once you have 20 Shines, a large, golden egg will appear in the fountain at Delfino Plaza. Spray the egg with water until it hatches, revealing a friendly Noki. The Noki will then open the path to Noki Bay.
Unlocking Pianta Village
Pianta Village, the home of the Piantas, is nestled high above the island.
- Requirement: Collect 25 Shine Sprites.
- Action: With 25 Shines, a giant beanstalk will sprout from the ground in Delfino Plaza, near the main fountain. Climb the beanstalk to reach the hidden entrance to Pianta Village.
Unlocking Corona Mountain
The final challenge awaits at Corona Mountain, the volcanic peak at the center of the island.
- Requirement: Collect 7 Shine Sprites from each of the seven main areas (Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, Pinna Park, Sirena Beach, Noki Bay, Pianta Village) for a total of 49 Shines.
- Action: Once you have 49 Shines (7 from each primary level), the large M Graffiti on the back of the Grand Pianta Statue in Delfino Plaza will disappear, revealing the entrance to Corona Mountain. This is the final stage of the main story.
Post-Game Unlockables & Secrets
The adventure doesn't end after defeating Bowser! There's plenty more to do and discover.
Yoshi
Yoshi is a valuable ally who can eat certain enemies and fruit, and even produce juice for special abilities.
- Requirement: Defeat Shadow Mario in Episode 4 of Pinna Park.
- Action: After this, Yoshi Eggs will begin to appear in various locations around Delfino Plaza. Each egg requires a specific type of fruit to hatch. For example, the egg on the roof of the fruit stand often requires a Papaya. Once hatched, Yoshi will follow Mario and can be ridden.
The Turbo Nozzle
This nozzle allows Mario to dash at incredible speeds, break certain obstacles, and even skim across water.
- Requirement: Collect 25 Shine Sprites.
- Action: After reaching 25 Shines, Shadow Mario will appear in Delfino Plaza carrying the Turbo Nozzle. Catch him to add it to your F.L.U.D.D. arsenal.
Secret Shines & Blue Coins
Each main level contains 8 Shine Sprites (7 from episodes and 1 for collecting 100 coins) and 30 Blue Coins.
- 100-Coin Shines: In each of the seven main areas, collecting 100 coins will award you an additional Shine Sprite. These are often the most challenging to acquire due to coin placement and enemy density.
- Blue Coins: There are 240 Blue Coins scattered across Delfino Island (30 in each of the 7 main levels, and 30 in Delfino Plaza). Collecting 10 Blue Coins allows you to trade them in at the Boathouse in Delfino Plaza for 1 Shine Sprite. This means there are 24 additional Shines to be earned through Blue Coins.
120 Shine Sprites & Final Unlockable
The ultimate goal for completionists is to collect all 120 Shine Sprites.
- Requirement: Collect all 120 Shine Sprites.
- Unlockable: Upon collecting the final Shine, a special cutscene will play, and the "Super Mario Sunshine" title screen will change, reflecting your complete mastery of the game.
