Trouble Spots & Common Difficulties
Even the sunniest of vacations can have its cloudy moments! Super Mario Sunshine, while a joyous adventure, presents several challenges that can stump even seasoned players. This section aims to illuminate those tricky spots with detailed strategies, item locations, and actionable steps to help you collect every last Shine Sprite and Blue Coin.
Bianco Hills: The Windmill Woes
Bianco Hills, your first major destination, introduces you to the mechanics of FLUDD and the pervasive goop. One common difficulty arises during the "Red Coins of the Windmill" episode.
- The Windmill Ascent: Reaching the top of the large windmill can be a puzzle.
- First, clear the goop around the base of the windmill to reveal the rotating platforms.
- use FLUDD's Hover Nozzle to jump onto the lowest rotating platform.
- As the platform rotates, spray the goop off the next platform above you.
- Timing is crucial here: jump and hover to the newly cleaned platform. Repeat this process, ascending the windmill.
- Once you reach the highest platform, look for a small ledge on the windmill's central structure. Jump and hover to it.
- From this ledge, you can perform a wall jump between the windmill's central structure and the outer wall to reach the very top where the Red Coins await.
- Collecting Red Coins: The Red Coins are scattered around the windmill's upper structure. Be mindful of the rotating blades and the gaps between platforms. The Rocket Nozzle (found in various locations throughout Bianco Hills, often near the water or in crates) can make this much easier by allowing you to reach higher points quickly.
Ricco Harbor: Navigating the Obstacles
Ricco Harbor's industrial setting introduces complex platforming and unique enemies. The "Red Coins on the Boats" episode is a frequent source of frustration.
- The Moving Boats: The main challenge is the constantly shifting arrangement of boats.
- Start by heading to the large, stationary boat near the beginning of the episode.
- From here, observe the patterns of the smaller, moving boats. They often move in predictable routes.
- Use FLUDD's Hover Nozzle to jump between boats. Anticipate their movement to avoid falling into the water.
- Some Red Coins are located on the masts of the larger boats. Use the Rocket Nozzle (often found in crates on the docks or larger boats) to reach these elevated positions.
- One particularly tricky Red Coin is often found on a small, fast-moving boat that circles the harbor. You'll need precise timing and a well-aimed hover jump to land on it.
- Underwater Challenges: Don't forget the underwater sections! Some Blue Coins and even a secret Shine Sprite require you to dive. Ensure you have full health before attempting prolonged underwater exploration, as your air meter depletes quickly. The Turbo Nozzle (unlocked later in the game) can significantly speed up underwater travel.
Gelato Beach: Sandbird's Flight
Gelato Beach is generally more relaxed, but the "Mysterious Hotel" and the "Sandbird" episodes can be surprisingly tough.
- The Sandbird's Perilous Path: The Sandbird episode requires delicate platforming on a living, flying creature.
- The Sandbird will fly a set path. Your goal is to collect all 8 Red Coins scattered across its back and wings.
- The Sandbird's movements are gentle but can cause you to slide off. Always be ready to adjust Mario's position.
- When the Sandbird tilts, move to the higher side to maintain your balance.
- Some Red Coins are on the very edge of its wings. Approach these with caution, using small, controlled movements.
- If you fall, you'll land on the beach below, forcing you to restart the episode. There are no checkpoints on the Sandbird itself.
- Hidden Blue Coins: Gelato Beach is notorious for its well-hidden Blue Coins. Check behind the giant fruit stands, under the wooden platforms, and within the various sand structures. The nozzle you're using can sometimes reveal hidden coins when sprayed.
Pinna Park: Roller Coaster Red Coins
Pinna Park's chaotic atmosphere and unique rides can be challenging. The "Red Coins on the Roller Coaster" episode is a prime example.
- The Roller Coaster Ride: This episode requires you to collect Red Coins while riding the roller coaster.
- Board the roller coaster. You'll be given a limited amount of water for FLUDD.
- As the coaster moves, aim FLUDD at the various targets (often balloons or specific enemies) that appear along the track. Each hit will reveal a Red Coin.
- The key is quick reflexes and precise aiming. Don't waste water, as refills are scarce during the ride.
- Some targets are positioned at awkward angles or appear for only a brief moment. Practice the route to anticipate their appearance.
- If you miss too many targets or run out of water, you'll need to restart the ride.
- Boss Battles: Pinna Park features a memorable boss battle against Mecha Bowser. Remember to spray water into its mouth when it opens to reveal its weak point, then use the Rocket Nozzle to launch yourself onto its head for a ground pound.
