Post-Game Content

Congratulations, Mario! You've rescued Princess Peach, cleared your name, and restored the shine to Isle Delfino. But the adventure doesn't end there! Super Mario Sunshine offers a wealth of challenges and collectibles for the dedicated player aiming for 100% completion. This section details how to achieve true mastery over the island paradise.

Collecting All Shine Sprites

Your primary post-game objective is to gather all 120 Shine Sprites. While you only needed 50 to complete the main story, many remain hidden or locked behind specific conditions. Here's a breakdown of where to find the remaining Shines:

Secret Shine Sprites

Each main area (Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, Pinna Park, Sirena Beach, Noki Bay, and Pianta Village) contains two hidden "Secret" Shines. These are often found in areas that become accessible only after completing certain episodes or by discovering hidden entrances. Look for:

  • Red Coin Challenges: Many secret areas feature a timed challenge to collect 8 Red Coins. Successfully gathering them all within the time limit will reveal a Shine Sprite.
  • Hidden Platforms/Portals: Keep an eye out for suspicious walls, unusual water currents, or seemingly inaccessible ledges. The Rocket Nozzle or Hover Nozzle are often crucial for reaching these.

100-Coin Shines

In every main episode of each area, there is an additional Shine Sprite awarded for collecting 100 coins. This can be a significant challenge, as coins are often scattered, hidden, or require specific maneuvers to acquire. Strategies include:

  • Thorough Exploration: Scour every nook and cranny. Break crates, spray graffiti, and defeat every enemy.
  • Hidden Blocks: Some invisible blocks contain coins. Spraying suspicious empty spaces might reveal them.
  • Blue Coin Conversion: While Blue Coins are primarily for purchasing Shines, they do not count towards the 100-coin total for these specific Shines. Focus on yellow and red coins.

Blue Coin Shines

Isle Delfino is home to 240 Blue Coins, which can be exchanged for Shine Sprites. There are 10 Blue Coins in each of the 7 main areas (70 total), plus additional Blue Coins scattered throughout the game's various episodes and secret levels. You'll need to find 10 Blue Coins to purchase one Shine Sprite at the Boathouse in Delfino Plaza. This means you can obtain a total of 24 Shine Sprites from Blue Coin exchanges.

  • Delfino Plaza: Many Blue Coins are hidden around Delfino Plaza itself. Look under bridges, behind buildings, and on rooftops. Some are revealed by spraying specific graffiti or interacting with NPCs.
  • Episode-Specific Locations: Each episode in every area has its own set of Blue Coins. Some are straightforward, while others require clever use of FLUDD's nozzles or precise platforming.
  • Graffiti and Objects: Spraying certain M graffiti, cleaning specific objects, or defeating particular enemies will often reveal Blue Coins.
  • Boathouse Exchange: Once you have 10 Blue Coins, head to the Boathouse in Delfino Plaza (located near the entrance to Ricco Harbor) and speak to the Pianta there to exchange them for a Shine Sprite.

Unlocking Special Abilities and Items

While most of Mario's abilities are available early on, a few key items and upgrades become more significant in the post-game for 100% completion:

  • Rocket Nozzle: Essential for reaching high-up areas and some secret Shines. Ensure you've unlocked it by defeating the Gooper Blooper in Ricco Harbor Episode 3.
  • Turbo Nozzle: Crucial for speed challenges and crossing large gaps. Unlock it by defeating the Gooper Blooper in Gelato Beach Episode 3.
  • Yoshi: While available earlier, Yoshi becomes invaluable for reaching certain Blue Coins and 100-coin challenges, especially those requiring fruit to activate platforms or clear obstacles. Remember Yoshi's limited lifespan and need for fruit to stay active.

Delfino Plaza Secrets

Don't forget Delfino Plaza itself! Beyond the initial few Shines, there are many more hidden within the hub world:

  • Pianta Village Portal: After unlocking the Rocket Nozzle, you can reach the top of the tallest tree in Delfino Plaza to find a secret portal to Pianta Village. This is often overlooked.
  • Hidden Red Coin Challenge: There's a challenging Red Coin course accessible from a specific rooftop in Delfino Plaza. Master your FLUDD controls!
  • Delfino Airstrip: Revisit the Delfino Airstrip after completing the game. There's a secret Shine Sprite hidden there, often requiring a specific sequence of actions or a hidden path.

Achieving 100% in Super Mario Sunshine is a true test of skill and exploration. With these tips, you'll be well on your way to collecting every last Shine Sprite and truly cleaning up Isle Delfino!
