Power-ups are essential for Mario's survival and progression in Super Mario World. Each one grants unique abilities:

- Super Mushroom: Transforms Small Mario into Super Mario, allowing him to take one hit without losing a life.
- Fire Flower: Transforms Super Mario into Fire Mario, enabling him to shoot fireballs that defeat most enemies.
- Cape Feather: Transforms Super Mario into Cape Mario, granting the ability to fly, glide, and perform a powerful cape spin attack. This is arguably the most versatile power-up in the game. To fly, run to gain speed, then jump and hold A. To glide, hold A after a jump. To perform a cape spin, press Y or X while airborne.
- Starman: Grants temporary invincibility, allowing Mario to run through enemies without taking damage.
- Yoshi: A friendly dinosaur mount! Yoshi can eat most enemies, swallow certain items to gain special abilities (e.g., red shells for fire breath, blue shells for flight, yellow shells for ground pound), and flutter jump. If Mario gets hit while riding Yoshi, Yoshi will run away, but you can often re-mount him if you're quick.
Understanding when and how to use each power-up is key to overcoming challenges. The Cape Feather, in particular, opens up many secret paths and shortcuts.
